Have you tried here: http://www.classiccarsglobal.com/ad.asp?ad...r_90___SUV they have quite a large stock of Defenders.

Not to far from you in the States..... but you do need to dig deep into the savings for one. I would have thought you would save a load on shipping, transportation, registration will be easier and the stering wheel is on the right side for you (which is the WRONG side Rolling Eyes ).

Plus it is only a short jaunt away so you could go look and test drive before you buy.

personally i'd buy a LHD one from spain drive it to the uk....fill acontainer up with the roght bits and ship it home. Then build a real nice defender with all the bits plus a few goodies you've checked o er yourself and a great holiday to boot!

Of course, what else could it be? Shocked Even in the UK there are some Defender drivers starting to see the light, and buy a nice LHD ICE or so Whistle Thumbs Up You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I checked out the site and it looks like they just had the on for 50000 usd. Bit much for an 84. I prefer a lhd but I would grab a rhd if it were the right truck.

In the US I think the cut off is 25 years old for Defenders (form what I have heard it is the same for Canada). Therefore you can't import anything newer than 1997. Then there are more hassles such as modifications etc.

Realistically you are looking at £10,000 for a good condition 1997 Defender in UK (but it will be 300Tdi and manual). Shipping to East coast will be in the region of £2,000 including shipping insurance. Then there is the long drive plus hotels, food etc so about £1000 for the journey (in a vehicle you don't really know). Then add registration of say a couple of hunderd. You would also have to do reserch, view/ test drive etc so another £2000ish.

So in the end you would be looking at spending in the region of £20,000 for a 'good' condition 25 year old Defender not to mention taking about a month or two off work to sort it all out...... and there are still possible problems which might happen- breakdowns, legal issues etc which can bump the price up.

Or pay an extra £10,000 and get a Pristeine (the Americans take better care of them than Zag!!) Defender. Then take a single day off work, get a lift over the border (3 hours in a car) look at, test drive, and pay all in one day and drive home with no worries of legal issues etc. Then you will also be home before dark. From looking at the place they are a regular importer of Defenders- what they do is buy an old one, then do a chassis up re-build with new/ reconditioned engine and gearbox. So basically you get a new (old) Defender for the price of a new one in UK.

All the good Defenders in the UK which qualify for export are now going up in price for this reason- There was a 130 fully rebuilt with modifications selling for something like £50,000 for that same reason.

Hasn't one of the other members done this too- really old 110 with V8 in brown? Maybe a good source of prices etc.

P.S. The Right side is the RIGHT side, where the Left side is just plain WRONG.... even though it could be the right side........ and I have just gone cross-eyed!!

Unfortunatly the vehicle needs to be 15 years old (1997 or older). They have also started clamping down on the vehicles modified in UK and then exported- all to do with the registration process. Easiest way to do it is import it completly standard and then modify it in country once it is fully registred.

Are the Canadians as Draconian about importing Defenders as the Yanks?

My brother is looking to move to Texas soon and take his S11 though it is now virtually an S111 after a major rebuild. So we have been looking into the business of what the US customs will allow in.
