Both Orange and T-Mobile are offering similar deals on an iPhone 5 with the T-Mobile deal offering unlimited data vs Orange offering unlimited calls - I'm very unlikely to hit the limit on either but I do like the idea of unlimited data, especially if it included tethering.
As far as I understand it both use the same 3G and mobile coverage so there should be no difference in coverage for either. Are there any other differences that anyone has experienced ? Any reason to go with one rather than the other for the moment ? At some point in the contract there's every likelihood the two brands will disappear anyway as they become "EE" but I'm assuming that may take another year or so for the moment. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

I'm with O2 at the moment and would be tempted to stay with them... the only thing is that O2 have no 4G facility and have not announced any plans to support it in the UK. Orange/T-Mobile OTOH already have 4G available in test areas and have announced a roll out across the country (starting with big towns/cities). O2's 3G coverage is already substandard and, as a result, we often end up using our iPad on three because the O2 iPhone can barely manage a 2G signal in the same place.
If I'm tied into a 24 month contract there is a very good chance that 4G will become as important in the next 2 years as 3G is now. I'm nervous about tying myself in to a supplier that won't commit to supporting a major technology upgrade. Currently EE (Orange/T-Mobile) are the only network to commit to offering compatible 4G coverage. What sort of problems have you had with Orange ? Coverage or customer service related ? http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

My issues are coverage. As an example, if I come off the M1 at J39 (Cedar Court) and head up Denby Dale road to Holmfirth I lose connection totally at least 3 times. Another route from Huddersfield city centre into Brighouse I lose connection there once too just as I pass over the M62. The number of times I try and access the Internet and get a message telling me I am not connected to the Internet is bloody annoying too. The 4G comments are interesting though and I may have to rethink. A blow really as I really was looking forward to binning Orange - I only moved to them from O2 because my car was orange too lol ![]() Ta C 2015 110 USW XS in Santorini with premium contrast leather seats in tan/black, black headlining and with Dual Finish alloys (in the garage, now on Wolf rims with Goodyear MT/Rs) 2012 '62' 2.2 X-Tech 110 USW now gone ... 1984 90 soft top with full roll cage, 200 tdi engine etc now sold 2012 USW XS 2.2 "FUU" now gone.... |

First of all I will state that I work for Vodafone although not in the mobile side of the business, I am not saying go with Vodafone or don't go with EE but setting the record straight. Martin this is not an advert but if you feel it crosses one of your lines feel free to remove it.
All of the major networks currently have 4g Long Term Evolution (LTE) test cells and have been preparing for LTE for the last couple of years, in fact VF have been rolling out LTE in Germany for the past two year and have learnt many lessons. I have an LTE SIM in the UK and test device and use it in our test cells, which are also located in several city's and rural locations, but are limited due to the reasons below. EE have launched LTE technology using some of the 'spare' frequencies/bandwith created when the two network were brought together, by moving users over to a single network they were left these so instead of expanding capacity for existing users they chose to roll out a version of LTE on the 1800 Mhz frequecy. The real advantage of LTE will come from the use of the 800 Mhz spectrum (analogue TV) which has far greater penetration and throughput and will be where the majority of the LTE usage will sit although carriers will also use their existing frequencies once bandwidth has moved over to LTE. EE like every other network operator will be bidding for these frequencies when they come up for auction. Until the auction results are announced, the other UK networks are not in a position to announce their plans for LTE as that could be seen to be presumptuous and would not go down well with OFCOM, and obviously reveal their plans before launch. LTE will revolutionise how we communicate the potential is far greater than delivering content to Mobile handsets, that will become clear over the coming months, we are already starting to see this in Germany and the content LTE is delivering, the changes it is making to the way people work and to their leisure time. LTE phones are still expected to be limited in capabilities mainly due to the screen size and interface, and is more suited to tablet size devices and above, with LTE MiFi cells adding capability to existing devices. As Jason alludes to I'd wait to see what else is coming from the other suppliers as regards 4g offer. Strikes me the EE route anounced could end up being more limited.
Also trying to understand if the new Iphone 5 will be fully compatible with the full range of freq for 4g. In the meantime think I'll stick to my 4s. As to Orange/TMobile I thought they we now the same company and you would move from one to other depending on signal strength. Mind you neither are good where I live, whereas o2 is geat. Stu |

I have a iphone 4 and my contract is up in November but I think I will upgrade to a 4s as by the time the new 24 month contract is up, 4g should have a good penetration by then and at reasonable prices and see how the lie of the land is then, 2011 Santorini Black USW XS.

24month contracts!!!........WTF
I have been running pay as you go for the past 5 years and more than happy. Last phone cost me £100 and lasted 3 years and this one cost £150 and so far lasted a year with only slight problems when the dog managed to get me to go swimming in the sea with the phone in my pocket (but fine since drying out). My monthly bills come to an average of £10-20ish (Saying that, I haven't topped up for 2 months after putting £25 on and still have £10). Soooooo 4 years has cost me a maximum of £1210 (more realistically about £800-900) . If I had a Iphone contract: (minimum of £41 a month for it free), 4 years would cost £1968!! But I don't feel the need to have my life on my phone- I know too many people who's Iphone breaks and then they have no music, videos, email, contact details, and don't know what they have planned for the next 6 months. Sorry for letting the 21st century disturb your slumber, would a mug of cocoa help ? ![]() I believe O2 and Vodaphone are also combining infrastructures and they seem to be hanging their hopes on that to supply any level of 4G package before 2014 by using the same route that EE have already taken. Once the auctions are resolved no doubt things will change but for at least the next 6 months and probably longer the ONLY operator that will be supplying 4G in the UK will be Orange/T-Mobile. Three are another potential option as they have bought a slice of the spectrum from EE. I'm still using a 3GS and have been holding on for the iPhone 5 to be available before upgrading. What it boils down to in the end is that in the next 6 months to a year only one supplier is expected to have any form of 4G support at all for the iPhone 5 and that's EE. After that O2/Vodaphone MIGHT finally make a move but there's no guarantee they'll support the iPhone 5 when they do. in the mean time I still have to decide... T-Mobile or Orange ! ![]() |

I guess the other reason for not going on contract is that other than this last year I spent the majority of my time in areas where I wasn't allowed a mobile so would have wasted 6 month periods at a time. I am happy in the 20th Century, people still talk face to face rather than sending an email even though they work in adjacent offices. I can't stand a cup of coco though- how about a nice pint of ale? Glyn ![]() ![]() |

the bp family are on vodafone, we have 4 phones and 1 bill, good coverage and when/if you phone them up for help, you talk to someone pretty quickly.. very happy on vodafone.
iphone5 - wait till the faults have been fixed, maybe about November time and go from there I used "3" and I can't describe the service I received from them on an open forum ![]() |

Technology may move on but a good pint of real ale is a timeless commodity that will never need upgrading ![]() |
