CTEK MXS 5.0 battery charger
My Ring battery charger that I use for my caravan battery gave up the ghost recently Big Cry . In a way Im pleased as ive been wanting to buy a Ctek mxs5 for some time, but couldnt justify the purchase.

So Ive now bought one from Amazon for £54 and its the dogs danglies Thumbs Up . Nice small/neat unit with silent operation..

It gives an 8 stage charge..




Well worth the money :thumbsup:

I've used an Optimate for the last 16 years on my motorcycle and it does the same thing. The Optimate is the same one all these years and I have only had to replace the battery on the bike once in all this time. The proviso is of course that the battery (unless it is maintenance free) needs to be topped up periodically.

Excellent product.....But now with version 6 I see. Mine isn't even labelled as version 1 it's that old, bit like me really! Laughing

I got the C Tek 7.0 will do AG battery and restore them . Very good piece of kit.

I have a similar charger, but Husqvarna branded, which I bought with my garden tractor, No problem to recharge the small battery in a 750cc garden tractor, and you can even leave it on there in the winter to trickle charge, but are these chargers any good to connect to a standard Defender battery for either recharging when necessary, or for contiuous trickle charging in the winter when the vehicle might not move for a week at a time? You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

yes perfect for the look at the C TEK site. i have a second set of connectors that can be left on the battery so a quick connection can be made.

Stage 8 of the Ctek is a pulse mode that keeps the battery topped up, as and when the level drops. I havent read my instructions fully, but I assume when its left connected to the Defender the battery doesnt need disconnecting from the vehicle?

Just had a little scare with my new charger. Last night I connected it to my old caravan 110 amp battery which doesnt hold its charge, and I was going to throw it away. This morning I went into the garage to check on it and I heard strange bubbling/gurgling noises, so I switched it off and checked it with my multimeter, which read 17V Shocked . I quickly ran away Embarassed

20mins later I rechecked the battery which read 10.9v, I reckon the battery is now dead, but what was happening during the bubbling/gurgling stage?

it over volts the plates to get them gassing! thats part of the refreshing process. Read the book! For a straight re charge go to normal, for a flat or deeply discharged battery then go restore.

But surely at stage 7 it shouldnt be putting out such a high charge?

So is the bubbling/gurgling noise from the battery considered normal? Ive just reconnected it to the same battery and straight away it started making bubbling noises, so I switched it off.

When doing anything electrical I always use the following formula..

Me + Electricity = brown pants Mr. Green

just leave it to do its thing....you got smoke alarms right?
