why the holes?
I'm a little bit puzzled as to why a lot of Defenders have the 3 holes cut out of each side of the bonnet, on the side (where the bonnet meets the wing top)... it looks pretty cool, but what's the purpose? cooling? air flow? Whistle I'll get my coat Whistle

Ive never seen them before so googled it & came up with this.

Neat Defender but I'd never do that to my bonnet, - ugly

It mentions bonnet cooling holes in his list
Doubt it would really do much to aid cooling, meybe for one of those hot running petrol engines, but not a diesel.
if it got that hot under the bonnet I'd hate be sitting in the car when its 45+ c in the shade

This goes back to drag racing/ street racing.

Cold air enters your engine bay through the grill...... it then can only escape one way- down and under the vehicle. This means the air at the top and back of the engine bay is able to get hotter and hotter. On regular cars they 'Space the hood' which allows airflow to leave the top rear of the engine bay which promotes air flow through the whole engine bay................ and in theory helping to cool the whole engine bay down.

On a Defender you can't 'Space the hood' so you can get a similar effect by drilling holes as you have seen. But this won't work really well as you will still have all the heat build up in the top rear center.

I guess it is up to you if you feel it will be beneficial!!

Now that you mention it,
heres a pic of my recently departed BJ40, it had the factory flutes on both sides, very toyota, Still would not look right on a defender tho I have seen them on the hot running Leyland P76 4.4 powered RRC's but never looked right.
