England 1998 Defender 90 300 Tdi PU Rutland Red
300 starting isue
Hi all, first post and its a question.

I have a 98 300 90. In a morning or if stood long enough to be totally cold it is a pig to start taking much churning and really labouring the starter. It needs the plugs on once at this time of year though in winter 2 or 3 goes were normal. It gives a big cloud of soot.

So far it has had a new lift pump from Delphi, new glow plugs and a optima red top battery.

When it is warm it almost jumps of the key.

Help, please.

could be fuel related:

Has the fuel filter been replaced ?
How long has the fuel been in the tank?
Could water have got into the system?

why not try some diesel cleaner (or BP ultimate) to clean the system ?

Fuel is clean new dino diesel as its my daily. Filter whilst not new has been changed to no effect..

Could be a bit of air in the lines somewhere. Would also happen if you have any veggie oil in the system at this time of year??

Did you have the thick gasket. When I put my new pump on they supplied the wrong gasket. Brought a gen one from Landrover worked first touch.

I have since found ashworth sell the same unit for a third of the price.

Tbh I did not fit the lift pump it was done at the independent specialist I bought the car from ad part of the warranty. Given the rest of what they did to it it could well be the wrong pump never mind the gasket.

when i had my 300, it had the same as you describe, and after much head scratching it turned out to be a split in one of the rubber spill rails Smile

glow plugs ?

can you check they are getting a +ve feed?

do they work ? if one or two are not working, it will be a pain to start but when warm it will be ok .

Whilst the plugs are new and were checked prior to fitting I did not actually check for voltage from the timer. Job for this aft. Cheers all. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

It could be an air leak into the system but afraid to say, more likely you're engine is worn and you have low compression when cold. Big Cry


A 200 or 300 Tdi unit in good condition will start easily without the heaters working in reasonable ambient temperatures. Richard

Either a 90, 110 or 130.

Was just looking for plug voltage and noticed one of the fuel spill pipes is damaged. Have pushed it on past break for temp will replace ASAP and cross my fingers. Cheers. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.
