Mine was already very slack and clattering but as MK says, I am also experimenting... Starting with the fact the Munich apes had the handbrake lever slack and almost vertical and claimed it should bite after 7 or so clicks ![]() a) I have today adjusted it "the Haynes way" to give full off to full on with 3 clicks (tighten the adjusting nut to brake the shaft then 1 1/2 turns off ) The shoes should be quite tight to the drum but that might also stop them rattling. b) Failing that, I will try backing off a lot more e.g. 4 turns (as long as the lever travel will allow it) c) Failing all that, it must really be another component failure that I will take up at first service (with a non-ape dealer) In any event, the X-Brake is just waiting to be fitted - I might even fit it and replace the drum just for servicing ![]() But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

My local dealer has my hand brake at 3 clicks. Had the hand brake re-call done last year and it's better than ever. Always reliable ![]() |

youtube is your friend. Take a vid cam on your next drive. Tape it and put a comment like 'poohole dealer xxx claims they know nothing about defenders and can't diagnose this noise' then social media it. May not get it fixed but will make you feel better. Pom |

Actually, having read about all the botched up recall dealer-jobs, I will do it all myself

Mine's done this on and off for 3 1/2 years - NEARLY fixed by Guy Salmon, Gatwick (well, Crawley, but they like to call it Gatwick
![]() It may be that the mechanism has a certain amount of 'stick' in it so the shoes back off the drum a varied amount each time - leading to the problem being erratic. Mine certainly is. I think it's worse in vehicles where the backlash in the rear diff is excessive so in neutral the prop-shaft is being pushed around by the back wheels, but the hand brake shoes are trying to slow it down - so it crashes from one end of the backlash to the other. I may be right, I may be wrong, but this doesn't solve the problem. All I know is my Series 1 didn't do it (but how many people go for a long motorway run in a Series 1? ![]() 1965 Alfa Romeo GT Veloce Sprint 1980 Fiat 124 Spider 2008 110xs |

Very nice explanation
![]() It also explains the mild grinding/vibration one sometimes gets on the motorway on the overrun - coincides with the clattering coming off the motorway coasting to the first set of lights ![]() PLUS the backlash/braking battle could make gear changing a little less pleasant ![]() But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |
