The question that I put to my policeman mate was not as using a cb with plug in mike, or handheld pmr with plug in mike, just the handheld pmr as it comes and it was this he said was illegal???

Found this, which is what you say;-

"Using hands-free phones, sat-navs and two-way radios when driving
It’s not illegal to use hands-free phones, sat-navs (satellite navigation systems) and two-way radios while driving, but they can be a distraction. You'll face the same penalties as using a phone if the police believe you’re not in proper control of your vehicle.

The Highway Code rules 149-151: mobile phones and in-vehicle technology".

So you can and you can't.

Ps. It is pretty silly when you think about it trying to talk to people in front and behind you on a euro band Embarassed I'll get my coat! ===================================

IMHO hand helds are the best solution (once configured to UK and not Euro) if you are only using them for group comms when you only need to speak to people within 100-200 metres

next time i'm out on the plains, I'm going to just use the small rubber ariel

I guess the problem we have all experienced from time to time with hand helds is when the internal settings all go back to default Thumbs Up

Can anyone recommend a good CB antenna base for use on a LR that doesn't require any drilling or need a rack/ladder or similar to attach it to.

Have no first hand experience of this one as mine is fixed to the rack but could this be a possible solution ?

Suction/magnetic combi . Not sure if the suction element alone would be good enough but maybe as others have said, a small steel plate stuck behind the lining above the rear door or windows would generate some magnetic grab too. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

My 42 is excellent too. With external aerial, not sited in the most advantagous place (above rear number plate clamped to light guard and very close to body) it can Tx & Rx up to 5 miles a clear as day. It may do more, but I've not tested it any further and the SWR could be better, although it's not too bad.

Perhaps that 42 was on 1w???

Must have been the white noise inside the vehicle?

Regarding the use of handheld set. The use of a two way radio is exempt in terms of use, however if your driving is affected and plod believe you are not in full control of the vehicle then you could be in trouble. But it's the same if you were eating an apple, applying make up (you know who you are) or changing the cd/ipod.
