having just read the great post on wiring the roof rack spots - it has reminded me that I still have this on my to do list.
However there seems to be a far better selection of SPOT lights available now and I am looking for views and feedback on what others are using. On the front A bar i have a pair of Hella Jumbo 220's with upgraded bulbs which fit well with the winch - but I do not want these on the roof - Ideally I'd like to get some LED lights for the rack but without spending a fortune. I'm not looking for huge lens - certainly not like the old Safari lights that LR sold. Small yet powerful - ideally 2 wide beam 2 narrow beam. So what spots are you using - ? If you were to replace them would you go with the same again LED / HID / Std ? Whilst not entirely (or usefully) answering your post, I have been thinking the same.
LED spots of decent quality still seem to be £400 plus per pair. Whereas Light Force or similar are less than half the cost... But would the lower power consumtion of LED's simplify the wiring ? Would a relay still be needed I wonder? The Boy's excellent write-up saves a lot of £££ by not buying the LR aux lighting kit (STC53208) at over £100... To be honest I still plan to use separate relays for the lights regardless of power consumption, the one real benefit if led will be the wiring. Given the lower consumption you will not need to use such heavy weight wire. I am however tempted to use cable suitable for up to 100w lights, that way should I ever need to change or replace in the future - I do not need to re do the wiring. Defender 110 County SW

A few of the HID's that I have seen on the Rally car have brilliant out put but they are also huge - so I think that rules them out - Someone else suggested looking at the Hella Magabeam lights - - Not seen these but they use them in one one of their quarry vehicles - Now need to do some more searching on line Defender 110 County SW Disco 3 HSE Freelander 2 HSE - SOLD going back to a car www.lothian4x4response.org |

Just for fun converted hella ff50 to HID (cheapo ebay set).
Ballasts still ok for me and at 100eur total cost not really an alternative. Light output is great, as already mentioned it takes a couple of seconds for the HID to come to full power, thats why i have them wired together with the std Halogen lights, instant light and the color is less blue. All in all very satisfied. had halogen lightforces before and this is simply better, much better. (really wonder what this conversion would do in a premium optic as the lightforces) If you go for HID set, go as low in temperature as possible, the higher the less output and more blue the light is. Aftermarket sets are generally more blue than the value they claim. I have 4500K, Mercedes is at 5500 and claims this to be the best temp for output and visibility. Merc is less blue than the aftermarket set despite what the box said. ![]() 2cents :) Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated ![]() |
