Both seem to work well, and both are sponsors on here. Best bet is to ask Gary and Pete any questions and then decide. Opinions on here are like belly buttons (everybody has one)

Had mine from Pete Bell, top bloke 100% genuine and very helpful, i've never used alive but i think youll get a great tune and service which everone you decide to use

In smart*ss mode I would say the boxes are the same save the stickers on them. It's the tuning files that the boxes write to your ECU that are different.
Forum search will reveal lots of happy customers with both companies. I am very happy with Gary's (Alive) support throughout the whole process and until I was completely happy. I don't think you can do much wrong with either of them. I wouldn't go for anyone else (judging from hundreds of forum posts here and elsewhere that I've read). It's just not worth it. |

Alive and BAS are probably of similarly high quality but Alive have been incredibly helpful sorting out my (problematic) 110

Don't use a piggyback type unit. They are rubbish and dangerous. |

Ditto.....I had one in my last td5..... A piece of lethal and dangerous sh!te. I remember I was on the motorway in the fast lane tipping 70mph at night when the ecu went into safe mode due to the interference of the piggy back tuning box. Jeep lost all power, not pretty when your in a line of fast moving traffic. Only way I could kick start the ecu back into life (still in the fast lane) was to quickly flick on/off/on the ignition......I'm sure if anyone saw a landie turning off their lights momentarily was wondering what's he at... This event happened twice.......scared the living daylights out of me......I smashed the box in temper against a wall. Remap and new intercooler sorted my woes. That's my experience with those boxes. I understand what your saying perfectly. The only problem with the ECU maps is though that they're un-removable am I correct in saying this? For example vehicle under warrenty / insurance |

No - they can be set back to factory map in a few minutes as long as you go for the "console" approach, e.g. Alive and BAS provide these remapping units and they can be used anywhere, anytime (e.g. here in Germany). If I wanted, I could go outside now and set my 110 back to factory standard before my tea cooled down.
![]() The only other thing you need is a PC to load the maps onto the console (this was a problem for me as I am a "Macman"). p.s. I keep my unit in the truck in case I have a prang and need to remove the map before LR or insurers get involved ![]() But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

The PSI type piggyback boxes are to be avoided.
Alive (and indeed BAS) have a system - ATRIC - that allows you to put your custom map on and off the vehicle when needed (as in Warranty/Insurance). Theses units are not left connected to the vehicle. You just plug it into the OBD2 port to the RHS of the fusebox and follow the screen prompts. When finished, you disconnect the ATRIC and drive away. This is the best way to do it as you can decided when to have the engine running as standard or mapped. |

I am a huge fan of Garys (Alive) customer service. I would say the BAS remap and Alivbe are very similar. But I used to own a Discovery and every Discovery Td5 wner who went to see Gary for a remap couldn't say a bad word about the service and product so when I came to getting one he was straight to the short list.
I looked at: Alive, BAS and Twisted. I remover BAS from the list as it was between them and Alive and Alive had way more better reviews. I went to Twisted (I was at Ripon at the time) and even though they have some awesome products I felt as though it was more of a chav 'I want 200BHP out of my Corsa which has 20" bling wheels and a ICE system which will make your ears bleed' type of place (if you get my drift). So I went Alive and then a few months later went back for a full exhaust system and currently saving up for intercooler and hybrid turbo from them. Glyn ![]() ![]() |
