I have a problem with rust starting on my Shadow tubular bumper as the powder coating has cracked in places Big Cry Is there any way of preventing this and repairing it? Otherwise it's just going to spread Confused

Some possible solutions going up in order of cost

1) Plastikote
2) Take off and re coat
3) Take off, strip off, galvanise then powder coat

3) is if you are going to keep vehicle long term

Have you had a few words with the manufacturer?

I haven't done so no because previous owner bought and fitted it (I assume) So it probably is 3 + years old at least so I do expect it to a certain extent. I could take it off and re-coat it. What would I need?

One of the magazines did an article on repairing/repainting powder coated bumpers a few months back.

I recently had a pair of 'arms' for a rear bike carrirer re powder coated. Cost was £10 cash

So a quick google for powder coaters in your area might be worth while.

Most run a minimum order of about £20-25. Pounds sterling is quite often a good way to pay

the thing is with powder coaters is they dont clean it up for you in the price you gotta do that yourself Sad personally i would either have it stripped sand blasted then powder coated costy but it will last or a more budget thing to do would be depending on were the rust is is rub the bumper to bare metal again treat with rust prevention then zinc prime and repaint the section in stead of the whole bumper Thumbs Up

I use this company, about 8 miles from Yeovil.

www.thepowdercoatingco.co.uk

They clean, prepare and powdercoat and there are minimum charges for each stage.

Contact Richard Harris and he will give you some idea of cost.

The standard of their work is excellent Thumbs Up

The BEST way of sorting out bumper is galvanise it. Cost of galvanising is about £45 for up to 50kg weight so a single bumper will attract minimal charge. Powder coating will be around £20-25.

Zinc primer paint is nowhere near as good as hot dip zinc galvanisation. Then paint. How do you get an effective longterm seal between paint and powder coating? Will water just leach under the remainder of the powder coating slowly moving the problem along the bumper?

So what will be the best cost effective solution long term?

Think in Kona situation I would be following up Bobs contact Thumbs Up

All depends how drastic it is, and how anal you are about a bumper being more than perhaps 'a bumper', Hammerite Kurust on the bare metal then spray with Smoothrite is a tidy low budget fix + easy enough to keep repairing the scratches that you may gather. 2005 TD5 90 Hard Top

I shall have a look tomorrow. Bob do you know if they do a collection and delivery service? Because obviously I can't drive with no bumper and only have one vehicle. This is the bumper I have http://www.firstfour.co.uk/item/1886734/de...overy-eyes and the rust is nearly all concentrated around the recovery eyes area where the powder coating has lifted and rust has got in underneath

They do do a collection/delivery service.

I have my original LR bumper in the garage, you could borrow it if you need to when you find a solution.

Also got the non A bar version of that bumper for sale !

One of the problems with powder coating is that it does not like sharp edges, i.e. 90 degree corners

So it might be worthwhile rounding off the sharp edges before you send it for recoating.

I'll bear that in mind as those areas are the only places that it has started to rust and the powder coating to come away

I completely agree.

Here is a picture of my winch bumper, 3 months after installation in a LR workshop.
I have cleaned and painted with Zinc and Hammerite (.. with a brush, and it shows, I don`t care )
