Renewing UK Passports
OK, it is time I renew my UK passport, so I google renewing passports.

First hit was http://www.passports-office.co.uk/

Strange I thought not .gov.uk web address

Then read (sic)
Quote:

Who can apply for a british passport?
When applying fo rour own passport as we were born in the UK we were classes as a british citizen, if you are unsure - you are eligible for a UK British passport if you are a:

Alarm bells started ringing about such poor English.

Then saw costs of phone calls £1.53 + network charges.

Back to google and about third hit down was real site http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/

There was found a news item

Don't be fooled by unofficial websites

People ordering birth, death and marriage certificates were warned by the Registrar General today not to be fooled into paying more through unofficial websites.

The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint from the Registrar General about third party websites misleading customers into believing that they were ordering from the government's own website.

The authority warned ‘UK Official Services’ and ‘UK GRO Certificates’ that they were in breach of the Committee of Advertising Practice code and that they must stop appearing or implying that they are the General Register Office.

Apparently cost of using these unofficial websites can be 3 x using official websites!

Now IF we are going to have a NANNY state maybe the government should prohibit unofficial websites OR make sure that the official government websites always appear first on google type searches.

Again buyer beware applies!

Just get a form from the post office.

When I got my other passport the company used a handling agent and they charges over £90 for it and it was delivered within a few days. Russell

I had to renew mine for a trip at end of Jan. Went to PO used their check and send system. They check your form and pics to ensure they conform and send it off for you. I needed to travel on 23 Jan, sent it 19 Dec, lady told me it would be tight as they close over xmas etc etc. Passport dropped through the door on the 28 Dec. Well chuffed with the service. PO charge about 8 quid for this service but to know that there is no problem with standard of pics before it goes is nice.
