300 Tdi - Dashboard lights and fuse blow
Hello everyone,

Yesterday, I was dismantling my dashboard to change the bulbs and screw one back in (the one at the bottom of the speedometer refuses to stay in place, but that's another story).

Everything was fine, it was lighting up correctly, I gave it a quick spray with compressed air, cleaned off the dust, did a final test, and the first time everything was okay, but the second time I heard a click coming from the fuse box.

And then I realised that none of the dashboard lights would come on. I got out, walked around the car to see if the sidelights were still working, and realised that I had no light on the right-hand side.

Sure enough, the fuse had blown. I replaced it, and it blew again. It was fuse no. 16.

It seems that this fuse controls both the dashboard lights and the lights on the right-hand side.

I really hadn't touched anything, the cables all seemed to be connected, and I admit I'm at a loss as to why this happened.

Car electrics are something I really don't know anything about, so if anyone has the knowledge to help me out, that would be great.

Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Its the old theory, especially when dealing with classic cars like i do,work backwards over what you've done, its all most certainly around the dash power supply which is shorting.or one of the bulbs is the problem, remove them and start again, replacing one at a time ,and checking to see if fuse blows, good luck, keep us updated!

As they say, it's often in old pots that you make the best jams. What I'm going to do (this is a mental note out loud to myself) is remove all the bulbs, put a fuse back in and see when the fuse blows. I'll have to buy a pack of 5A fuses, just in case! I'll keep you posted!
