Hiccups etc
Hey folks 😁,
Well, this Landy is taking the Mickey out of me....
In the last few months it's had;
New Aux. Belt
Aux. Belt tensioner
New bearings in idler pulleys
New Viscous Fan bearing
New Alternator
Replacement Panhard Rod with new bushes (I found that a PO had fitted the earlier Rod so I had M14 bolts in brackets drilled a clearance for M16 đŸĢŖ).
Oil and filters.
Exhaust manifold and turbo removed, 2x broken studs drilled out and then refitted.
Roof guttering cleaned and mastic'd.

All of the above done by me and my mate Arthritis... đŸ˜ĸ

It's fair to say that I am sick of the sight of it.

Driving it the other day and it 'hiccupped' - sudden loss of power and the Engine Malfunction light came on. It only lasted for a second before it cleared itself and drove normally. It did the same thing 10 mins later.
It's happened about 5 times now during a couple of drives over a couple of days.
Also, yesterday morning the engine started normally and idled for about 5 or 10 seconds before stalling. I tried to restart but got nothing - no starter motor - nowt but a couple of dash lights. I tried the key again and she fired-up as though nothing had happened.

So, she's started 'hiccupping' whilst driving - momentary loss of power, Engine fault light, self clears after a second.
Engine died whilst idling and wouldn't restart (no starter motor) - engine restarted normally after 5 or 10 seconds.

I've had Nanocom plugged in and no faults (apart from the usual AC one) present.

Any thoughts gratefully received 😁

Check battery terminals. Relay contacts (particularly under seat ones), chassis earth would be starting places.

What do gauges do doing this?
Is it full electrical failure, or engine failure you think?

Thanks Andy - will check all connections and earths... 👍👍

It 'feels' like an electrical issue - but it's not a 'total loss' of electrics.

Hopefully I'll find a bit of this electrical string that's come loose.
If not, I'll dig out an old SD card and record some drives on the Nanocom so I can check 'other stuff'... 😁 2002 Land Rover 110 Td5 Utility

** Update **

The issue is getting worse - with the engine idling it will suddenly stop and all dash lights extinguish. If I then cycle the ignition switch the dash lights do illuminate but dimly and the engine won't crank - not even a click from the starter solenoid.
If I then cycle the ignition a few times - dim lights, off, dim lights, off, bright lights and Starter motor 'available'.
Engine will restart but dies again after 10 seconds or so....

I've checked all of the major earth's apart from the one on the bulkhead - as I can't find it... 🤔

I know that this has 'earth fault' written all over it but has anyone experienced similar and can help me narrow this down..??

volt drop the engine, volt meter from block to good earth, crank engine while in non start situation,or disable engine so it wont start while cranking, voltage should read less than 0.5 v.Any higher and it means bad earth as the current is taking the easier route through the meter.

this could also be a high resistance in the power supply,ie positive or negitive battery terminals to start with.

Thanks for the suggestions - unfortunately I can't crank the engine over when it's misbehaving - I just have a couple of dim dash lights.... ☚ī¸

I've just had the engine running with the Nanocom connected and noticed some anomalies;

Airflow (g/s) = 4.8 to 4.9. this figure doesn't increase with opening the throttle. I took it up to 3000 rpm and it didn't change. Is this correct...??

Also, Accelerator tracks as follows;

Track 1
Pedal up - 0.89v (I think this figure should be 0.3v)
Pedal down - 4.72v

Track 2
Pedal up - 4.16v. (I think this is low)
Pedal down - 0.42v

Track 3
Pedal up - 4.69v
Pedal down - 0.37v

Track 4
Pedal up - 5.02v
Pedal down - 5.01v

Could I have multiple issues that all randomly started at the same time for no apparent reason..??
Strange 'airflow' readings and a couple of Throttle values out of spec.
Could either of those cause Stalling and dim dash lights/unable to crank over the engine...??

I'm flummoxed... 🤓 2002 Land Rover 110 Td5 Utility

attempt to crank using volt meter on block to good earth volt meter will read voltage you are losing due to bad connection.

confirm all your power supplies are good ,and earths,or you will be going round in circles chasing faults caused by them.

Ahh, thanks el sid - I understand.
This is one of those jobs where you need a helper.... I shall have to wait until 'the angry one' returns after Lunch...
I checked Battery Terminals - they are clean and tight.
I I also removed, cleaned, applied Dielectric Grease then refitted the Starter battery earth to the T/box on the nearside.
I did the same to the awkward one on the offside (3x smaller guage wires with ring terminals).

Any others to check..??

It sounds similar to an issue I had last year.

My TD5 would randomly cut out, sometimes when idling, sometimes when driving.. (Left me stranded across a roundabout when the engine died!) Sometimes it would not start at all.

The symptoms were always the same, engine completely turned off. When turning the key, the engine would not crank and on the dash, I had no EML light or heating coils coming on.

The symptoms got worse and worse, to the point where I was never sure if the car would start.

If you were stopped and turned the key, there was no sound from the fuel pump and as mentioned above, no EML or heating coil lights.

I found that by giving the seat box a big kick, the engine would restart.
I did lots of trouble shooting, redid all the earths, even replaced the yellow relay under the seat. Made no difference.
I then stripped the relay bases and replaced the yellow and the black relays under the seat. Cleaned up all the connectors for the relays and made sure they were all tight.

Since doing that, I have not had the issue re appear. The car has been running of over a year now and no sign of the fault returning.

So it might be worth you while cleaning up the relays and replacing the black one.

I did not have the power drain issue you are having, so you might have a completely different issue.

Thanks B1_D130, that's food for thought and something to check. My issue is very similar to yours. Engine wont crank, silence from the fuel Pp, no Glow plug or EML dash lights.

I'm going to have to go and buy a new tin of 'electrical contact cleaner'. I'm in a dilemma - do I risk going in the Landy, or do I wait for the boss to get home after lunch.... If only one of my bikes worked... 😃đŸ˜ĸ😄 2002 Land Rover 110 Td5 Utility

I also removed the wires from the relay base and cleaned them, as well as giving them a squeeze with the pliers to tighten them up a bit.

As they say, every little helps.

(I took the good ladys car to buy the electrical cleaner, as I was never sure if I could actually make it to the end of the driveway, let alone the shops!!)

I had exactly the same troubles as you, minus the battery drain issue. Shocked

My fix was to re-seat the yellow relays under the drivers seat, this would give a temporary the fix which could last a day or a couple of months.... as time went on the symptoms got worse I dismantled the relay bases of the two rearmost yellow relays under the drivers seal and just pinched up the terminals (some of which were very loose) four months on no further problems Thumbs Up

Thank you very much for the suggestions - looks like I'll be getting more familiar with the under seat black hole....

Fingers crossed 🤞🤞 2002 Land Rover 110 Td5 Utility
