Check your intake side..air filter and pipework..
Sensor supply and ground.. and make sure its the correct sensor with a digital output..

Regarding Andy63’s advice on the sensor. Many vendors incorrectly quote and supply the same sensor for the 2.4 and 2.2. Invariably they supply the 2.4 sensor to 2.2 owners.
Was the new sensor the same shape as the old one ? If I recall correctly the 2.4 MAF has a square edge at the bottom on both sides, whereas the 2.2 has a curve on one bottom edge.

Can you remove your new MAF and post a picture of it and one of the label with the part numbers showing.

See Andy63’s post in this topic for details. https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic96494.html?highlight=2+2+maf

If that’s ok then the next thing to look at is the inlet manifold to check seals and for cracks. Rare but has happened before. Then the throttle body to make sure it is opening fully, as yet I’ve not heard of it having issues but if not fully opening it could. Note the TB on the 2.2 is either fully open when running or fully closes when engine is shut down. It’s function is to shut the engine down smoothly, nothing more than that.
