Long-term storage
Hello Ladies and Gents,

As I’m moving abroad and can’t take my PUMA with me, I’ll unfortunately have to put her to rest for a while.... at least for one year. Big Cry

Do you have any recommendations on how to store her properly? Is there a standard procedure for long-term storage?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Regards,
Ben

The most I did were 6 months - stored indoors. All I did is battery disconnect.

What worries me most is diesel bug. I think there are diesel biocide treatments, but never used myself, so I cannot advise. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I believe its good to have a Full tank of diesel as mitigates having condensation in the tank 2015 Puma 2.2 110 XS Utility Station Wagon - 2024 - Present

Do a search for long term engine storage. If you decide to pour some oil into the cylinders, remember pistons are not flat. Puma 110" SW

Whenever I have a vehicle sat around for a long time I just start and run it up to temperature once a month ish. Appreciate that this might not be possible depending upon where it’s stored. 1983 110 automatic OM606

Have you got a garage, it anyone likley to use it / start it over the year your away,

If you have a garage and the car will simply be left...with no one viewing. Add a pedal lock / steering lock.

I would park it up (as dry as you can) inside the garage. with a brimmed tank

Handbrake off and out of gear.

Raise on axel stands or swap old wheels over to save flat spots.

Disconect battery unless you have a ctek top up charger or similar

I would also proabaly invest in a dehumidifyer with a pipe runing out of garage so it empties itself. These things rot inside out and those damp lumps of mud hiden in the chassis and cross members will start to fester. Cars don't like not being used. Even the exhaust if it has moisture in it.

Lastly leave a load of bait traps for mice, rats etc.... If they can find away in and start eating your wiring Big Cry

The Green Goddess fire engines were stored under cover and raised off the ground on axle stands, someone was employed to spin the wheels once a month to prevent the brakes from seizing - (they weren’t primarily fire engines - their main purpose was to work in unison pumping water across the country in the event of a major emergency)

With a Defender I would do as above and also remove the battery unless it was going to be driven for long enough to drive out condensation and thoroughly warm the engine and gearbox

Thank you for your replies,

summarised I will do:

- I will put it into the garage, fully closed and safe to theft and climate exposure.
- I will put an old set of rims and tires on and let some of the air out as the garage is quite height limited
- I will put some diesel additive inside: https://www.liqui-moly.com/en/anti-bacteri...html#21317
- I will fill up the tank to it's limit
- I will use a CTEK MXS 7.0 battery device to keep the battery safe
- I will make an oil-service
- I will set a rat/mouse bait trap

Any other remarks, let me know. Thanks for your input.

Regards,
Ben
