New here - Wait for ordered Defender or buy used RRS now
Hi All,

I am quite new here and have been using the site to research option to buy a new Land Rover.

I am currently awaiting a fully loaded new Defender 110 D250 hardtop to arrive, however the 'finger in the air' estimate I am currently getting from the dealer is January, given the issues JLR are having at the moment. This is a guess though, as they still can't get access to the system. Given that I still have my order in with Tesla for the Cybertruck, and thats now 5 or 6 years ago, I am getting a bit frustrated with having to wait for cars, only for them never to arrive.

I need something a bit bigger than my GR Yaris which has accidentally turned into the daily driver. It is a bit of a struggle to put my son in the back being a 3 door, and while my small labrador fits in the back quite snugly and can sit up freely, I don't think she really enjoys it that much. I had a bigger car, but that had to go back.

All my trips are relatively short (probably 25-35 miles round trip) due to only needing it around Cambridge sites.

Therefore, I wanted to ask some opinions on the forum to see what I should do. In my mind there are three options:

1. Wait for the Defender, bear with the GR Yaris as a daily driver
2. Buy a bigger interim car and wait for the order to arrive
3. Buy a suitable used car now and cancel the order/sell on as soon as it is received

Now, there are many reasons why I wanted to buy the 110 hardtop, noticely due to having the extra space in the back and putting it through the business as an LCV (I work in construction). So a £72k inc. VAT vehicle soon becomes less money when you start thinking about the tax breaks, etc.. So in case anyone is saying "go and buy a RRS P460e for that kind of money", the tax breaks on the new vehicle played a big part in my decision to buy new (i.e. I would usually buy used).

However, I have been looking at a used L494 Range Rover sport, specifically the p400e model, and it seems like quite good value. I can pick up a 2020 Autobiography Dynamic, 70k miles, in a nice colour, for £27k. And it has 5 seats rather than 2. I have a car charger at home already so can charge there. But as it is 5 years old, out of warranty and a range rover, is it too much of a risk on a more complicated drive train?

So I guess here is the Dilemma, do I wait for the Defender in Woolstone Green, which I think looks great, or go for a RRS P400e now as a private vehicle and live with the risk?

I would seriously advise doing research/reviews on the new landrovers especially the 2ltr engine ,if they still use it.

You obviously have too much money to spend it on cars. My advice is carry on the the Yaris and put the money in the bank. 6 months from now it's all water under the bridge and then you still have your money.

PS not sure how you thought that cyber truck would ever be allowed to drive on European roads...

A quick glance at the landrover website shows several brand new unregistered defender hard tops, so if you really want one, you could have one delivered in 5 days.

Of course you wont be able to choose the exact spec and colour. This can be annoying, but I found it to be preferable to waiting for another 6 months when my 110 order was cancelled.

As well as searching for new stock online, picking up the phone and calling dealers can be helpful. They can usually see what is in build or on the way for the whole.group. Chances are there will be something out there that suits and is available pretty quickly.

That's what I would.do anyway, as that is what I did.

They're quite different vehicles to own, and drive. The RR is a luxury wagon and the Defender is more of a workhorse.

However on air suspension the Defender is hardly utilitarian. l would say if you plan to use the vehicle for work, go for the Defender.

lf it's purely for private use then the RR would be a good option, so long as the used one you've seen is a good one. They are remarkably good value second hand but l wouldn't buy one without a comprehensive warranty.

You just missed out on the 2 year warranty event on used cars. I was looklng at a low mileage RR P400e Autobiography for 36k from a main dealer with 2 years warranty but it sold before i went to look. The only concern Ive read about the P400e RR is that when the small battery runs out it drinks petrol but then you dont have the DPF worries or crank worries that you have with the SDV6. Having said that my 2016 Disco 4 HSE has run without any issues since i purchased it in February.

You mentioned putting the kid and the dog in the back of the Yaris..... so no kid in the hardtop then?

I had assumed that there was a front passenger Isofix on the 110 HSE, but I don't know if being a hardtop would change that?

If not, I guess it will have to be two fixed cages in the back.

Ah, this would have been useful. Definitely helps with the risk concern.

“You obviously have too much money to spend it on cars”

Well, he does explain that it’s a business expense and benefits from tax breaks and concessions. Otherwise, few would even consider a Defender: now much too expensive to be “more of a workhorse” as was suggested, but too “people carrier” to be considered prestigious.

Cheaper to buy a new 4-door saloon car AND a van?

Firstly I don't understand the tax breaks for a company style car, however depreciation is still a killer. so your new Defender will lose a fair bit as soon as you take ownership?

Does the 110 have three seats in the front, where the middle seat is an armrest / or seat depending how you want it? or has that option gone?

The P400 in the RR you can take out an extended warranty until the car is 10 years or 100,000 miles old, if it has a full RR service and from a dealer this is straightforward. If you buy one privately you have to have in inspected before they will warranty it.

I would think real range on electric would be 20 / 22 miles on a P400e which may suit as you do small local runs and if you top up each time on solar say its always 'full'

How about something random for a bit while your car arrives or you decide. These look great value..

VW id Buzz, Its dropped half price already to losing less and less now..

Loads of room for all your kit, Dog(s) and kid would love it.

Bit different from all the run of the mill things on the road..

A friend in the UK just leased an Audi Q8 electric as a company car, which he said cost him very little because of all the business incentives. He has always been a modest car person and he said it was really vulgar how cheap it is and how this is not accessible to the common man. Clearly the car industry lobbied to a point where they can still sell their premium models that would otherwise be unsellable.

It's like that now, everyone some deal and nothing looks like it seems. All of it in "the name of the environment".

^^^ I think most of the car market is kept going on lease deals,

People only care how much it is per month it is, the list price doesn't matter if your leasing (for a private person anyway)

VW Id buzz Van my mate has one for £199 month. He was paying more to keep his 10 year old transit van on the road... Smile

There was a BMW 330e Sport estate lease deal for £379 a month... probably a £50K plus car?

The current crop of Jap electric cars are buttons to lease...

So another option is to lease something random for a year, 5000 miles will probably cover you and you know the total cost up front. Smile

"Firstly I don't understand the tax breaks for a company style car, however depreciation is still a killer. so your new Defender will lose a fair bit as soon as you take ownership?"

lf you buy a Defender "Commercial" and put it through a business you can claim the VAT back (if you're VAT registered) and the tax on the purchase.

Also being Commercial it's classed as a van, so you pay BIK (benefit in kind) of only £700 per year.'

So, your £70,000 Defender could end up costing you nearer £40,000.

ln terms of residual value
The Defender holds its value well, certainly better than a Range Rover.

^ How long do you have to keep it for?

Good explanation but I'm thinking what stops me buying one, keeping it a day and selling it... I've saved 20% sell for a profit?

What am I missing... Very Happy must be something.
