Transmission oil change
So l decided to change the gearbox and transfer box oil on my new-to-me 2014 Defender 110.

The vehicle has done 49,000 miles so neither is actually due according to the handbook.

The gearbox oil was brown and looked past its best. lt was quite thin in consistency but there was 2.5 litres in it.
So the level was not low.
The filter and drain plugs looked untouched.

The transfer box oil was black, and there was only about 1.5 litres in it.

After changing the oil in both units the transmission is smoother, and quieter. Using a pressure pump (under £30 on Ebay) makes the job much easier and almost a pleasure to do.

For the price it’s well worth doing, obviously just be sure to use exact quantities and spec.
GL4 for example in the MT82 as an example, and exact quantity.

Transfer box and axles can be fill to filler.

1 shot swivel grease is a good thing too.

With the garage services I think there are many things that get left, bi annual brake & clutch fluid just as as an example, plus parts quality scrimped, cheaper oils etc.

Equally they do need to make a profit, but will also say depends on what the customer requests.
LR explicitly did not include brake and clutch fluid with the typical service, even though it is best done every couple of years as it gets hydroscopic, not to mention that the bleed valves can seize over time and things like prop greasing doesn’t get done. ____\We|Will|Win/___

l've done the swivel grease as well.

The engine oil looked new, as did the oil and fuel filters.
