![]() Click image to enlarge Note that the expedition roof platform is removed now for the Winter, leaving its mounting legs, to significantly reduce wind noise and fuel consumption. Takes about half an hour to remove and replace. |

Doesn't that make-up holder on the side add more to fuel consumption than the roof rack?

No way. I took it on a 350 mile round trip earlier this week and averaged 36.5 MPG with a high of 38 and a low of 32 on some mainly low speed town section. With the rack platform in place the fuel consumption was about 1.5mpg lower on longer runs at around the same speeds but the same at lower speeds. The wind noise from the platform, when fitted, was a very good indication of the drag it made. There’s no such noise or any drag that I can discern from my wife’s wetsuit holder or the steps on the other side.
The best fuel consumption I’ve had driving normally in traffic on flat roads was 42mpg, a few weeks ago over just under a 50 mile journey. I’ve yet to need topping the tank up since the 350 mile journey which consisted of running from 20 miles South of Aberystwyth, up to Llangurug, to Newtown, Shrewsbury, Telford, where we stayed two nights, down the M6 and whatever to Warwick and back the same way apart from using the M6 toll road on the way North. The overall MPG average over now 500 miles near enough, has reduced to just over 35mpg due to lower speeds on rural roads since we got home, yet the gauge still indicates just under 200 miles of range left. That’s 700 miles on a tankful. How does this compare with yours which possibly has no top or side additions which might or might not effect wind resistance and therefore economy? |
