You do it yourself online at DVLA. Takes seconds or if you want dealer to do it you need to supply with details of retention and transfer.

Not these days they can't as you need the V5 in your name to do it. As @JDPRRUK says you can do it yourself online in moments. You just need the new V5 in your name and your retention certificate. I'm sure the dealer would be more than happy to make up a set of new plates for you for free if it gets their name on the car. They will just need to see the retention certificate. You are then ready to put the new plates on as soon as your receive the confirmation e-mail from DVLA which should arrive in minutes unless there is a problem.
The other advantage of doing it yourself once you have the car is that you have the old number plates so when you come to sell, and if you retain your private plate, then you can put the old plates back on before you sell. 2023 Defender D300 HSE in Pangea Green 2002 Discovery 2 Td5 Auto in Zambize Silver 2010 Freelander 2 Td4 HSE in Bali Blue (sold but we should have kept it) |

When I bought my three year old RR last December they saw my registration retention document and put my new number on the car. I ran it for three months and wanted some service information and to check the MOT date. No such number. Turns out they forgot to transfer the numbers. So I did it myself in ten minutes on the DVLA web sight. Was driving around with an unregistered plate for three months LOL.
Bought a used Defender to keep it company back in June this year and made sure they did the job right on this one. Now I have two vehicles with only the suffixes differing, one being an S and the other a T registration, so its easy to remember, especially as I ran almost the same number plate for 20 years on a Land Cruiser Amazon and it was the only number I actually remember out of so many others. |

Don't forget that you have to tell your insurers of the plate change as well, or you could find yourself uninsured. 2023 Defender D300 HSE in Pangea Green

Indeed. My RR was insured for the new numberplate that I had bought and the dealer had supplied and fitted. A number that they forgot to register with the DVLA despite having the relevant registration and entitlement documents. Never mind, these things happen and no harm was done. It was a bit of a shock. I remember now how I actually found out, nearly three months after I took possession . I realised that I had not received the new registration document with its new number and phoned the DVLA. They took it in their stride as it is not uncommon apparently. Sorted within the hour.
