First week with the 2014 Defender
Bought this while my 2022 Defender is in for repair.

One needs to be sold once l decide which one to keep.

So how's it going with the 2014 one? Well, the jury is still out. l love it, but unless l can make it a bit easier to drive it may be going back.

Trouble is, l've been spoiled driving the new one for three years, where you don't really have to do anything.

The 2014 one is going to Alive next week to see if they can make it better as a daily driver. Having said that l've already begun to get into "classic" Defender ownership.

Despite promising myself that l wouldn't do anything to it until l decided if l am keeping it, here's the list of things l've done so far!

Clear wax treatment mainly inside the bulkhead, crossmember, and other places the garage missed when they did it.
Four cans of XCF wax treatment so far

Replaced rear drive members
Checked front ones, no issue there.

Fitted front mud shields. l found them in the shed, having bought them for my TD5 years ago and they didn't fit.
They stop mud being thrown up into the front outriggers and floor.
Sealed some known leak spots (although it's dry inside, a rarity)
Fitted tow bar drop plate
Took the grille off and treated surface rust, and sprayed the aircon rad black
Refilled swivels with grease
Adjusted lock stops to improve turning circle
Clutch switch on order

At least it will be good for the next owner if l don't keep
it.

What has gone wrong with your 2022 Defender?

The longer the repair takes the more the classic will grow on you and you'll reach the point where it's a keeper

The DC/DC inverter failed on the 2022 Defender. lt's the first problem in three years, well apart from warped front discs which l replaced myself with a second hand set from someone who upgraded their brakes.

Here's the new and old Defenders

I think you just have to amid: you like the ownership element and you just have to get used to the driving element. I have too many cars (110Td5, D4, S3, P38) but recently inherited a fairly new Toyota Aygo and frankly it's just perfect to running around going into the city parking, running cost etc! It's probably as perfect a transport as you can get.

You have to not be swayed by the salesman and define for yourself what you want and what you need. A lot of people can do with a lot less fancy car for what they need.

Of all the vehicles I’ve owned none of them come close to the perfectly imperfect feel of the (old) Land Rover. Your old 110 looks fantastic, no comment on the other one. 1983 110 automatic OM606

In the 90's I made regular trips from UK to Perpignan in a 1.05 Litre VW 'Breadvan' Polo, 4 speed, no aircon, door to door averaged 20 hours

„Bought this while my 2022 Defender is in for repair.“

I like that Smile

In what way is the real Defender hard to drive? Maybe using the clutch to compensate for drive train slack, but I put that down as character. Smile

Yeah it's getting used to the clutch and transmission. l started another thread on it, l am getting better at it.

Apparently a remap improves it, and eventually a new clutch/output shaft l guess.

Automatic is the answer! Although mines an ‘old’ auto, it’s fitment totally transformed the vehicle. Along with about 280hp. 1983 110 automatic OM606

Looks like a lovely 2014 you have there.

If its just the going back to manual that are struggling with perhaps an auto conversion could work in the future?

Looking longer term, I certainly would not to run a newer generation Defender out of warranty, the older one would be safer bet I would say and an auto conversion could be done at some point if you so wish.

I'm very lucky and I have a array of different cars,

If I want to feel like my classic Defender drives well, spend a day in my Series 3, if I want that to feel luxury, try the Series 1...

Then we have modern stuff, no keys, put in 'D', lights come on, wipers come on, they bing, beep, cameras everywhere... massaging seats even and heated wheel !!

However I still love driving the classic defender....because you actually DRIVE it.... If I want lights on I turn them on, if I want the 4th on a hill I have to choose it... I have to press buttons and get involved.

Lucky as I say I have the option, but a few years ago my Defender was my daily, I love the waves, the looks, its different to almost any eurobox on the road. I STILL take hundreds of pictures of it and turn round when I park it Smile Smile

Thumbs Up

I have a 2015 110UXS, I got it last year and the drivetrain was rough. In the first 3months I changed out the rear drive shafts for one piece then it went in the garage for upgraded LOF Clutch and output shaft. All together it made a massive difference. (original 2 piece drive shafts were well worn, as was the Output which was missing teeth and clutch was rattly)
Pretty sure its already remapped (my mechanic says it dives like his which is same car with a stage 1) but I don't think its a good one as I still have the judder. So plan to speak to Alive or BAS at some point to get it re done. 2015 Puma 2.2 110 XS Utility Station Wagon - 2024 - Present
