It could be anything- but don’t panic, because there is not much to go wrong on a Puma, even though they have the most ‘tech’ out of all the Defenders.
It’s more than likely just a loose connection or a temporary lost signal connection somewhere. When was the battery changed last? That’s where I’d start first. After that, check your brake fluid level. That might be just dipping below minimum, bringing a light on. Most likely a faulty/tired front ABS sensor or a handbrake sensor. The wet weather can be known to cause a little issue now and then also. It’s something that might just sort itself out. Mine came on for a few minutes before and never re-appeared. 2017 5.0 V8 Supercharged RRS SVR 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS. |

Thank you, I'm not entirely sure when the battery was changed - I can look into that.
I note you have the same vehicle as me.... When you start the car every time does the yellow abs light always stay illuminated until you drive about half a yard? Then goes and doesn't reappear again? |

Yes - that is completely normal for the Puma. That light goes out once the vehicle has done its ABS self check.
Nice bit of information for you - if you pump the brakes 10 times within ten seconds before starting (just ignition on) , will disable the TC. 2017 5.0 V8 Supercharged RRS SVR 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS. |

If the brake fluid is anything much below max level it will trigger the brake light too.
![]() It can trigger the brake warning light and trigger a “what the hell is that now” moment, and possible inclination to want to plug in diagnostics to research DTC’s etc. Where all that is needed is a small fluid top up, it can also happen intermittently if going up, or especially down a steep hill. Yes the ABS light only extinguishes once the ECU and ABS module detects rotation.
Hopefully it will be something minor, but of course it could also be your ABS has given up the ghost. Mine did a couple of years ago and showed no alarms or alerts on the Nanocom. Failed its MOT. It could be the switch on the bottom which does fail. You can replace that in-situ but it’s not easy. Hopefully it’s something cheap and easy! Good luck 👍 |

Hi all,
Quick update — I took the car to my local garage today. I couldn’t get into a specialist, but my mechanic owns a TD5 and works on a few TDCis, so I’d like to think he knows his way around them. He scanned the car and it came up with “pump failure 3 (pump sticking),” though no specific codes were shown. He’s suggested sending the ABS unit away for repair. My concern is that, from what I’ve read, some people have had the warning light clear after a few weeks, while others have fixed similar issues by replacing relays or fuses. The last thing I want is to be £600+ out of pocket only for the fault to remain. The car itself drives fine, but of course the ABS light will cause an MOT fail. The ABS unit part number is SRB500540. I’m wondering if it’s worth trying a second-hand one first to see if that resolves it? |

The pumps do seize due to water ingress - and that was what was wrong with mine.
There is a shuttle valve modulator that fails on the bottom, and you could try that, but if it is showing a pump fault code then it might be a waste of money. I sent mine away to be inspected and they said it was beyond repair. They sent photos of the water ingress. I purchased a recon unit which had a warranty. It has been fine… I understand that the Disco units fit and are more readily available and therefore less expensive. As I write I’ve just realised I’m talking about the WABCO ABS unit and yours may be different! Good luck |

Thank you very much, if it shows a pump fault code (pump failure, pump sticking) why would it be a waste of time to have the pump sent off?

I think I know what you mean, are you saying no point having a look at the valve modular if it's the pump that has the fault code? Mine is a WABCO unit. Any idea where I can pick up a disco unit from please? ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge |

Sorry my explanation was poor having re-read it.
Yes I meant replacing the shuttle valve would be a waste of time if the fault is showing as a pump failure. I didn’t have access to a fault reader initially so went through the whole wiring, relays and shuttle valve etc. in desperation and hope! I even replaced all 4 sensors. When I did get access to a fault reader it wasn’t clear. It was only when I sent the unit away to ECU Testing that I found out it was the pump. Someone will chip in and answer your question about where to purchase a second hand unit. I bought my recon unit from ECU Testing. By the way, it might not look like it but you can remove the ABS unit without dismantling half the Defender! I hope all goes well. |

According to online - if it's a pump sticking it can't be repaired......
And ECU testing don't sell refurb ones ![]() Struggling to find a disco 2 unit but even that, not sure my mechanic would fit it. |

I seem to recall that they said the same to me regarding the pump - albeit mine had well and truly given up. If had been one of the smaller/simpler components they’d have refurbed mine. Mine was essentially scrap.
I definitely bought a recon unit from them. I’ll try and dig out the detail. It’s a bit of a faff to fit but definitely doable. I bought blanking plugs for the brake lines just to minimise the fluid loss. Obviously if you send yours away for refurb/replacement then you’ll be off the road for a week or two. Have a look on eBay for a Disco unit? |
