So seems VW is now planning to get into the utility EV space. The (apparently authentic) mock-up outlines look pretty nice. We really need to see some affordable utility EVs. Ford is there, Tesla perhaps, now VW.
I still think Land Rover missed a massive opportunity there, and probably Ineos too. If you’re not building EVs already, you will have lost the game. https://techcrunch.com/2022/05/10/vw-launc...ccounter=1 |

I think it’s a great vehicle.
Then again, I liked the original. It’s a couple of years off production, but you can get your name on the waiting list for $100 (refundable). Also good that VW have backed the USA start up that bought the intellectual rights to use the Scout name. The Harvester looks good too. I need to start saving up… |

True ... and true. In the sense that, as the cards are being dealt, the battle for the EV supremacy is already lost to China. The European car industry needs to reinvent itself, and in EV terms is lagging behind. It is also behind in conceptually "reinvent" the car to fit the XXI century needs. Not mine - mind you, I am happy in XX century terms, but I do not represent the future that will buy vehicles in the decades to come. I just would not like a future where, like for most mass-consumed electronics today, everything is owned and marketed by 4/5 Asian giants with everything produced in max 3 countries ... from a redundancy standpoint, this is veeery bad. |

This is so true for me too, but it does make you wonder who is? A few years back when I lived in Texas the media was full of the self driving car revolution. As I looked around me I was looking at plenty of old bangers, so many people with no money to maintain a car, but in desperate need of transportation. Soon we all be reading our social media in self driving cars kindly and selflessly provided for by Elon Musk. Still waiting for that driverless cars distopia, although Elon Musk has already revealed himself for what he is. Now living in France, most people here drive beaten up Renaults, Peugeots and Citroens. They don't care about how their cars look probably don't care about if the radio works. Just dropping off the kids etc. So in what future will we be spending $€£ +50k on a fashion statement with gizmos no-one needs? As the car industry is again in trouble will we just end with personal transportation being a privilege of the rich? Already in France the emission restrictions are being questioned as elitist.. watch that space.. |
