LT230 intermediate bearing spacer changeover point | |
Good morning all, chasing down some alarming noises from my T-Case and found that the intermediate shaft nut, although still staked, had lost it's preload and there was play in the Intermediate gear. Nipped up by feel as I sort of assumed it was a collapsible spacer.
However, doing some reading this morning whilst I wait for the RTV to cure, should a 2003 TD5 LT230 in fact use the selectable spacer, and therefore the 65Nm torque on the 30mm nut?
I did re-stake the nut, but whilst handbrake and prop etc are all off, I'd rather be sure I've got the right tightness. I imagine I'm probably up somewhere near 65Nm on the nut right now, but was only going by feel. If it's a selectable spacer I will torque it up and re-stake again.
Lastly, if the bearings have been running without preload for who knows how long (I've been chasing this noise for a couple of hundred miles), is it likely that I really need to rebuild the LT230 anyway? Hard to quantify the play in the intermediate gear but it was visible and movable by hand before. When I drained the oil (max 1.5 year / 8k miles ish) there was some magnetic oil around the plug, but no significant chunks/wear material evident.
