You're absolutely right of course, I hadn't considered the lower bearing until after I'd posted. The shape of the cone will however still be trying to eject the pin.

I still contend that there is no point whatsoever in going down the stainless route, and I personally abhor the widespread use of stainless fasteners on vehicles.
