TD5 - Onboard data via CANBUS
Thought I'd share this - it's been a bit of a long term project but it's not far off done now...

I really wanted a rev counter but didn't have one - after looking at the prices for a proper one, I decided to repurpose a Canchecked MFD32 (https://www.canchecked.de/mfd32/) that I had left over from another project.

I thought it would be simple, as the TD5 is modern and supports OBD, right? Wrong... It's non standard, so the gauge wouldn't talk to it. Then I found out that the TD5 Auto ECU does support CAN.. So I procured one of those from ebay, re-flashed it with the manual map, along with a patch from the author of MEMSTools which enables additional CAN data. I then spent a fair amount of time figuring out the CAN messages to get the gauge to display them... So now it can display pretty much any of the live data a nanocom or similar can - RPM / speed / temp / fuel amounts / pressure / etc etc You can have multiple screens and swipe between them, set alarms, do all sorts. It's pretty neat Smile

Once I figured that out, I 3d printed a mount to put it where the rev counter would go Smile

Next steps are to look at external sensors to add more data - possibly oil temp and EGT Smile

If you have a Puma, or V8 with a Megasquirt or similar you could probably wire it straight up, it'd be much more straightforwards..

Brilliant! Compliments! Nice job!
Now that we are seemingly "orphans" of the binowl* - out of stock/out of shop since months, and Michal is not answering emails about it ... I guess if you package and organize yourself, you might recoup some of the time and effort invested in your project!
I can't say myself, as I still need to sort if I will resurrect my old Madman from my P38 and re-hash it for the Td5, but I do know of at least a couple mates that would happily jump at such unit ...

Can't say I like much the display case, but to each its own.
Even a "bare bones" option I think it appeals, to whoever wants to make its own enclosure.

Keep up the good job! Bow down
