lt's actually £45,000 so l would have to put in £5,000 and there would also be a £5,000 tax bill on selling the 2022 Defender. So it would effectively cost me £10,000 to change. l think in the long term both vehicles will end up at around £20,000 once l've done 80,000 miles or so in them. So financially it's not a winner for me to swap back to one of the low mileage premium priced (£35,000-£45,000) old models. I would have to look at a higher mileage one at maybe £20,000 But it's still a better deal than the massive losses suffered by some of my friends/customers on new vehicles. |

I’ve had all Land Rover derivatives from a Series2, 300tdi, TD5 and 4 Pumas ending with a new 110 in 2015.
Currently I now run a 90HT since 2023. Whilst it’s a JLR product there is no comparison. You can drive it more easily, more comfortably and hence further. I wouldn’t go back……as a primary drive However ….. I miss many of the vehicles I have owned…and I really enjoyed the Puma derivatives. This is why I bought a Puma 90 as an addition. It’s fun. It’s a hobby keeping up with it. Trying to hold back the corrosion and keeping up with maintenance ![]() It can’t always be about best value or residual values in the future. We have to live today methinks. |

The value of my 2022 Defender seems to have tanked in the last few weeks, l think possibly due to the new registrations in the U.K. this month.
Last month l was being offered £42,500 now it's £38,000. l don't know if it will go back up a little. New ones are now £57,000 base price for a 90 Commercial Last edited by lightning on 4th Sep 2025 8:12pm. Edited 1 time in total |

I’d make the swap sooner than later - you have been toying with the idea for a while. Do it while the newer defender is worth what it is. 2017 L494 Range Rover Sport SVR
2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS. |

If you've spent so much free time looking at old defenders then I think that pretty much answers your question for you! I don't think I have viewed 30 cars in my entire life..
That one though..mmmm. Ten thousand quid to change to something a decade older than what you have now..I'd probably be looking for money back, even if it meant an older car. If you do change, and then miss your old, new defender (if that makes sense) then it will cost you a fair bit to put yourself back into the position you are in now..probably another £10K on top of the £10K to change the other way.. |

That's what is making me hesitate to change. lf l did go for the older one, it would have to be a keeper that's for sure. The only other issue is l do a lot of short journeys every day and the DPF on the 2.2 TDCi is a concern. The time between journeys is between 20 and 60 minutes so the engine will stay warm. The new one is fine in that respect, even in Winter. |

Madness, my friend! As beautiful as the old Defender looks, there’s no way I’d use it as a daily driver or for long-haul trips. I’m in Germany now, after driving down from Glasgow to Vienna and on to the Poland–Ukraine border. In just 2 days I covered over 1,400 miles, and after 10 hours behind the wheel I’m still in one piece and ready for another 10 hours back to Scotland tomorrow. It’s comfortable, quiet, and safe — I cruised through Germany at a steady 160–180 km/h without effort. The D300 engine takes the punishment like nothing else. And the best part? Minutes later you can drive it through a river or up a mountain as if it were still on tarmac

When I was in the dealers I saw a Sedona Red 110… absolutely lovely.
They wanted £84k… and I was nearly sucked in. Mine was valued at £42k. Then I came to my senses… two of mine = 1 Sedona 110. ???? After all I can only sit in the Drivers seat 😀 The longer I keep it the depreciation will slow.. so now a 3 year plan is a five year plan. I’ll review then Clemmo |

The old ones certainly hold their value if they are low mileage. Motorway says the one l am looking at is worth £40,000 to them.
So a retail price of £45,000 is probably about right. Ten years old and it's worth £14,000 more than it cost new. Sadly if l buy it the mileage wouldn't be low for long. But it's probably going to depreciate around the same as the 2022 Defender except the old one will probably stop depreciating when it gets to around £20,000 |
