Squeaking/rattling driveline noise on rotation.
Little bit of a vague post. But I’m just writing this down while thinking out loud. It’s too wet out to get under the car today.

I’ve had what can only be described as a rotating squeaking/dry joint/grinding sound under the Defender.

I thought it was the prop shaft as it is making the noise on rotation, regardless of in or out of gear. The noise is there if I freewheel in neutral. I have replaced both front and rear props and topped the swivel grease up, nothing has changed.

My thinking is possibly handbrake shoes sticking or a worn out brake pad sticking. Or something more severe like transfer case?

Plan is to get it up on axle stands and start rotating things and drop the axles/transfer case and gearbox oils anyway.

Is there anything else I’ve missed? Is there a VCJ on a Puma? The search brought up worn VCJ noise that on explanation sounds similar.

Again, bit of a vague post, but just writing down my thoughts.

Cheers Smile

there is no viscus joint on the defender, they are more agricultural the drum brake maybe making the noise for the handbrake.

Prob best to get under with wheels up (and turn the items over to see if the noise can be located closer)

I have had a squeak/rubbing on mine that was a stone in the brake backing plate, was simple to fix that one. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

Some people think the failure of the front diff is inevitable and will happen to all of us. I am not so sure, but if there would be noise from the front diff surely it would show in the oil.

Let us know what you find.
