6th Gear Noise???
For the past year I have had a noise coming from the engine bay when travelling in 6th gear. It has no effect on performance and not got any worse over time. A whoosh or air rushing sound (appears to come from the nearside engine bay) and only occurs as soon as I change up to 6th and accelerate. It is associated with acceleration in terms of when you hear it but does not rise or fall with revs.

Its not making any difference to driving but I am interested in knowing what it might be as it started inexplicably and now seems to be part of the car.

My initial thoughts are that it is the gearbox as I have got a synchro mesh issue between 5th & 6th but it doesn't seem to come from the gearbox.

Any ideas?

On the 2.2 there is a distinctive change in engine performance when changing from 5th to 6th as the engine map changes when in 6th and more power is provided. You really do notice the vehicle pulls much better in 6th than it does in 5th.

So I wonder if that whooshing sound is induction noise as the engine sucks in more air. However you say it’s coming from the nearside and the air intake, filter box , turbo etc are on the offside. I think I read in your other posts that you have a snorkel/ RAI as well, and that can cause an induction sound when drawing more air, but again that’s on the offside.
Are you sure it’s coming from the nearside , sound can travel in weird ways and deceive our ears.

All just pure guesswork but thought I would highlight

Ps, is your airbox lid fitted correctly ( easy to get it wrong and not engage the clips under the wing correctly) and clipped down tightly.

Thanks Ianh

Definitely sounds like the nearside, both from the window and through the passenger footwell. All hoses and air filter box etc are all tightly fitted and all silicone replacements. I have a fairly new intercooler fitted and the engine is running fabulously.

The sound is new so something definitely changed but it does sound like air movement but only under 6th gear load. Its an odd one. I've had this car for 7 years and its got me stumped.

If you think of anything, let me know.

The heater blower ducting, where it meets the blower box is a very poor ill fitting design. Basically a touch fit sealed by a bit of sponge foam. ! What engineer could possibly be proud of that !!

This can leave a big gap at the bottom and get worse over time. On yours it may be a very poor fit and at speed you could be hearing the air whooshing under the vehicle and in the engine bay.

So worth having a look at it from under the engine bay.
