I last bought a L663 Defender 90 during the COVID times and accepted that there were very few Defenders for sale and it was a sellers market. If you could find one you had to paid a premium and I understood the dealers “take it or leave it’ attitude.
I have decided to return to the LR fold and buy another Defender 90. I thought we had moved on from the days of COVID. Having enquired about several 2nd hand Defenders (24 plate or newer) I am shocked by the attitude of dealers who seem to think they are doing me a favour, and 2nd hand prices seem artificially high? A dealer I visited today, the showroom was empty, no customers to be seen. I was made to wait and then the salesman was disinterested. He didn’t even take my details to follow up. Perhaps that is why they have rows of 2nd hand LR products out front. To put this into context I have bought several other nearly new/new vehicles in the last 18 months (inc. £100k + vehicles) and my experience of other brands is different. They want to sell vehicles and will negotiate. Perhaps time to look at alternatives? |

I’m looking for Defender 90, no older than a 2024.

Have you looked on Auto Trader? Most will still be in the dealer network at that age though. Few owners sell after one year or less.
Most are bought on PCP. You'll be looking at demonstrators and unsold stock. They still sell well and few discounts are available. |

2nd hand prices seem to be up at the moment, had mine 3 years from new and WBAC are offering me 8.5 K less than I paid for it. Ok to get a new one with the same spec would probably cost at least £25 K as mine is an XS which came with quite a few extras as standard. 110 XS 250 MY 23 Gondwana Stone, Cold climate pack and towbar

Autotrader has quite a few for sale, but the ones that fit my needs are in the dealer network. Two of the ones I have enquired about are LR management cars.
2nd hand prices are definitely up at the moment, which is surprising when you see how many are for sale and some new ones being discounted. |

Checked my 2021 110 D300 XD HSE today, and it’s only £500 less than it was valued in January, so they do appear to hold value well, especially with low miles. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

I’ve just sold my D350 110 xhse (25 plate) I bought new (with 6k of options and 6k discount) for 4 grand less than I bought it 5 months ago _ long story short my Disco 4 better suits my needs. The car went up with Sytner for 82k which was list price in March; now new its 2 grand more to by due to bved changes.
My car has dropped to 81k just today 3 weeks after it went up,for sale. The problem the dealers have with used Landrovers is that used finance is a lot more money than the new pcps and most people finance these cars - I paid cash. It’s cheaper to buy new than used due to discounts available on new cars, if you have cash buy new. The dealer markup on used Defenders is around 7-9k. |

Also new prices have gone up, the starting price for a 90 Commercial in 2022 was around £44,000 including VAT and now it's £57,000.
Add a colour, towbar and side steps and it's £60,000 Which will make low mileage used ones more desirable. |

Dealers don't like cash purchases, you would think they would, but a lot of money is made from finance and PCP agreements.

Get any discounts you can for PCP or finance and then within 14 days pay off the finance to land rover. Thats what I did to get the 6k of pcp discount savings.

I think it is down to the ever shrinking standard spec on the defender. What was standard on an S or SE is now a cost option even on the more expensive models.
I have a MY24 XS (no longer available). To get near the equivalent spec now would cost around £18k more than my invoice - assuming no discounts. So, it kind of makes sense that a used MY24 XS with low miles can retail for more than it's original list price. In effect the buyer is getting a £15k discount on the equivalent new vehicle. Looking at my own car and what is available in the approved network like for like, there is nothing available with the same plate and under 20k miles for less than I paid new. Given the huge amount of Defenders out there it doesn't seem to add up - until you go on the configurator and then the year old car looks like great value even above list! |
