Vertical towball weight
Hello all,

I just thought that I would post this here as I have been having a “fight” with JLR for months now because on their site and in the handbook it is written then the Defender (and Discovery 5 … haven’t checked the others) have a maximum vertical towbar load of up to 350kg

This does not correspond with what with is on the car registration papers and in the Certificate of Conformity.

Since I often tow heavy (3.5 tonne) horse trailers, I contacted JLR for clarification.

To cut a long story short, I received the information from JLR that the car is “designed for 350kg vertical towball weight but has only been certified for 150kg as this is the minimum required to tow 3500kg”

It is, however, possible to have it increased on your car papers and then you will officially have a maximum vertical load of 350kg.

I have just been through the process for both my Defender and D5 and it is now completed.

I just thought that I would let anyone that is interested know so that you can get the right statements from JLR to get this done.

So the tow ball can cope with 350kg without modifications but is only certified for 150kg? ls this the fixed or deployable version?

Interesting. So the CoC states 150kg and assuming that the CoC has not been changed, which papers where updated to reflect the 350kg? You country's registration document?

Yes… why car registration papers now have the maximum vertical load set at 350kg.

They have a note that they have been increased in accordance with text XYZ that was done by DEKRA. I just have to keep the DEKRA test with my car papers.
