I understand what you're saying about monitoring trends, and Will do another sample next oil change, but would you not agree that the soot content being so high after such low mileage warrants a closer look now? That's reinforced to me by Will's reading from his engine that is a much older and therefore I'd expect to be "dirtier" than a Puma. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Im not sure what I'd be doing tbh..
Are the injectors pockets on the 300tdi external to the rocker cover.. if so then that's not a source of contamination of the oil on his engine, but could be on yours..the issue is do you go ahead with trying to determine where your issue lies.. having to re fit injectors with new sealing washers wouldn't be that bad if you wanted to rule that source out..
Im saying that but its not a job I've done on the defender up to now..

Maybe silly questions but I am not knowledgeable about this ... can the high soot content be a source for the 'blackness' of the Diesel oils? And in what manner it could/would affect the performance of the oil as a lubricant?
I am always wary of the newflanged "long interval oils" and I am now thinking if these are potential results after a fairly low mileage, and if this was not an isolated case, how interesting would be to see the results with double - or triple - the mileage Shocked

Rule of thumb, anything the manual states for "intervals", cut it in half. The manual looks appealing for people who are looking for low maintenance costs and at the same time dealers can extend their warranties as far as possible that won't be too ridiculous. 10-12,000 Km+ oil change for a diesel motor is not health at all.

I support you doing an oil analysis however the lab technician is probably right. If you are changing your oil at 10,000 - 12,000km most likely your oil has already broken down well before the actual change and producing soot. Other factors like temperature and usage will also affect it.

Old school method of 5,000 km intervals will keep your motor clean and healthy.
