The 12-seat and 10-seat station wagons were available from the 1960s through to 1990 when the max number of seats was reduced to 7 for TA and compliance reasons. There will be a small number of post-1983 coil sprung vehicles around but strictly they are not Defenders since the Ninety and One-Ten were only rebranded as Defender in 1990. I don't believe (but am happy to be proved wrong) that any 12-seat Defenders were manufactured.
The 12-seater was historically less popular than the 10 because of the driver licencing and age restrictions on vehicles with that many seats, which remain to this day. Station wagons from 1983 to 1990 were available with 4-cylinder petrol or diesel engines, or with the (heavily detuned) V8 petrol. Sadly I think finding a genuine factory V8 12-seat coil-sprung station wagon will not be easy nor quick (nor inexpensive) but it would be a rare and collectable thing. |

The TD5 Defender was available with up to 10 seats until 2006 when the "Puma" replaced it. The Puma had a maximum of 7 seats as a SW (station wagon)
You could buy a 110 TD5 SW (9 seats) and then fit the front centre seat, if not already fitted, to make it 10 seats. Last edited by lightning on 10th Aug 2025 9:17pm. Edited 2 times in total |

They were available after 1990 - my 1993 Tdi 110 CSW had 10 seats from the factory.

^^ That's interesting, if you'd said 10 I would not have been surprised but 12 does surprise me. I thought the 12.had been phased out by then.

When I first got my 1995 registered 300Tdi 110 CSW I liked to describe it as an 11 and a half seater.
It had a three seat side facing bench either side in the rear, three individuals in the 2nd row. Then 2 and a half in the front as only half a person could really sit in the middle seat in the front. It is now a 6 seater with a cubby box replacing the half seat in the front, a fridge replacing the middle 2nd row as it seemed a good place to put it as it only had a lap belt and then two forward facing fold ups in the rear instead of benches as more child friendly. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green- Slowly Turning into Keswick Green - It's a keeper. Wide Track Sankey- In bits- Gone to a new home M0XQS |

12 seaters were popular with individuals who could reclaim the VAT (in the UK) on the purchase price - I looked into it but production ceased by the time I was ready to buy. They required first MOT after 12 months rather than the usual 3 years for new vehicles

There was a lovely blue 1983 V8 110 12 seater for sale on here a couple of months ago, very original, though it’s probably sold by now…

Further research has made it clear that my dating info is clearly wrong, my apologies. There were genuine 12-seaters available into the 1990s, such as the rather nice 300Tdi vehicle in the link below: https://www.defender-landrover.co.uk/2016/...ounty.html So there definitely are 12-seat Station Wagon Defenders (i.e., post 1990) around, albeit probably not many. Does anyone know when the very last 12-seater for the UK market was actually built? It seems very hard to find out, but I cannot find any mention of 12-seaters later than 1995. |

My parents 2001 CSW was a factory 12 seater, reregistered as a 9 seater with the DVLA by the previous owner for use with a standard driving licence, which I expect may have been the fate for a lot over the years. I’m not sure when they were phased out, perhaps when the Td5 had the interior facelift, or whenever the benches were replaced with individual tip-up seats, but they are out there.
