All Standard defender keys are just a key, the immobiliser and central locking elements are in the fob.
The 10AS you have by default has all the alarm capabilities. They will just be switched off if you don’t have the sensors in the vehicle or the wiring. What you will need to do is check the wiring, obtain sensors and find someone with a Nanocom to enable the alarm functions. You seam to have the immobiliser coil fitted, if not already enabled the immobiliser function can be enabled and synchronised with the engine ECU using a Nanocom. |

Hi Ianh,
Thanks for the reply. Apart from the ignition coil which I already have what are the sensors I need to be looking for?. some form of ultrasonic I presume ?.hopefully my gap diagnostic tool will enable me to switch everything on ..just curious about the sensors you mentioned. |

Yes the interior ultrasonic sensors. If you search on eBay for landrover Defender interior alarm sensor you will find used ones for circa £25. Compared to £300-£400 new!!!
The unit is mounted on the trim just above the driver head |

Thanks IanH….Okay, understood. Do you think I will also need the bonnet and rear door push switch and the siren?

Yes get bonnet switch, you can also fit them behind the headlight surrounds as additional protection. I thought a rear door switch is there already, but if not then yes fit one and wiring .
The Battery backup siren (BBUS) and loom would be great, however the BBUS is no longer available. Do a search on here for BBUS replacement, there were a few topics looking for alternative options for a faulty BBUS, however I don’t recall a solution being found. |

Hi IanH,
So a busy weekend on eBay and I’ve installed a preowned siren and wing loon to suit, an ultrasonic and roof loom to suit a bonnet switch and bracket and a rear door courtesy switch. So now onto my 10 AS module my gap three diagnostic tool has a few settings that I can activate but I am conscious that I don’t want to switch off and switch on too many things in case I end up with a immobilised vehicle, what would be your best guess Just enable factory settings or disable then enable everything on the list and see what happens. It does seem like I could be playing a game of Russian roulette here or do you think I should not be too concerned? Appreciate your thoughts. |

I don’t have a gap IDTool, I use a Nanocom, please see this doc that explains the alarm functions and their settings. https://www.nanocom-diagnostics.com/upload...0Guide.pdf

Hi IanH,
Many thanks for the link. It explains a lot …..although I don’t have a nanocom unit I just decided to go ahead with my gap three and see what happens. Guess what? The alarm seems to be fully functioning. I have Alarm warning LEDs on the dash and have the ultrasonic and doors opening activating the system.. Unfortunately, I also have a engine that will now not start with the alarm set or disarmed.. Do you think I need to implement the emergency key code? I read a lot about??. if so, where would I get this code from? As it’s a 2009 car? Although I have all the owners manuals and weirdly the original delivery docket in the info pack I don’t have the security card with any of the codes on it, my gap three unit does not seem to read the module as I believe there’s a code somewhere in the info. Is there another way that you know of that I might be able to get access to the code, love to know your thoughts thanks again for you time. |

I think you need to do a sync between the 10AS and the engine ECU.
On normal operation when the ignition key is rotated the fob links to the 10AS and the 10AS sends a de immobilise code to the ECU to allow the ECU to start the vehicle. To allow this to work the 10AS needs to be in sync with the engine ECU. Diagnostic tools have the facility to perform this 10AS to engine ECU sync. On a Nanocom this menu option is called an EMS resync. I believe a gap IDTool can also do this but you need to read the manual to find where the function resides and what it’s called. |

Hi Ianh,
Okay did the security link twice this morning and still the engine starts and then dies immediately? So presuming the immobiliser is still active any further suggestions on what I might do and how I might get this code to at least get the engine and the vehicle operational again, thanks again for your time. Sorry for being that guy. |

Okay, quick update…
Went back into the system this morning switched the alarm section off updated and then did a sink and I can now start the engine as I presume the system is back as it was before I started messing with it so thinking it’s got to be some sort of configuration issue or maybe something else. I thought this was going to be a game of Russian roulette ..lm nervous about pressing any more buttons until I have more info any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated if anybody’s in the Oxfordshire area with a Nanocom, I’d love to pop over And see if I get more functionality out of that rather than my gap unit thanks for your time as always |

I have a feeling that the transponder coil is either not picking up the code from the fobs or the coil is not connected to the 10AS. So I would check the transponder coil connection to the 10AS and the working of that coil.
PS. The fobs use a separate antenna on the 10AS to activate/ deactivate the alarm and unlock / lock the central door locking. So if that’s working it shows the fobs are synchronised. |
