I can’t answer your question... however I do have one for you. Was your 2.2 mapped ? And if yes who by ?

Just to riff off Ianh, I have a remapped 2.4 with only a "mild" tune. I can wrap my EGT into piston melting range with ease. The extra power is welcome but it has to be applied with care and attention. Remapping is not "fit and forget".

that sounds crazy Shocked ...surley any engine map if applied properly should not cause piston damage given all other factors are working as they should, ie quantity of fuel injected, timing of injection and any piston cooling means working ..
you should be able to drive the vehicle without having to worry about pistons melting, unless something else is wrong..

Maybe it sounds crazy, maybe it doesn’t, but it is true.

👍
Not doubting what you are saying ....sorry if it came over that way..
Just whether it is right for a mild map to have that consequence without something else been amiss..

True, we are on a bit of a tangent, but, an important one.

Andy, doubt away, this is the internet!

The only way remapping can make more power is to add more fuel at more advantageous times. This also always makes more heat. You can offset that somewhat by improving breathing and charge cooling. I can't comment on the 2.2 but the 2.4 does not have a good breathing head -- this is why bigger turbos do squat -- so there are limits. Worse, we also map out the EGR which sole purpose is to reduce combustion temps.

All that to say, yes, even a mild map can lead to potentially damaging temps. Turner engines has said they are now selling lots of new heads, and almost exclusively for remapped engines.

Does this mean you shouldn't remap your engine? Maybe. If you are going to carry/tow large loads up long hills where long periods of max power are required, I would keep the stock map. If you want to be much more zippy in traffic and blast up short hills, then a remap might fit the bill. Just also fit an EGT and keep an eye on it.

A Puma engine can take more heat than a 300tdi. I'd never run a TDI more than 650C/1200F. You can run a Puma at 700C/1300F.

Back on topic, a faulty injector can hole a piston faster than a remap!

I get the faulty injector..but that's what im saying.. something is at fault to cause a piston melt.. it shouldn't be a correctly mapped engine..
The 2.2 tdci I think exists in a few hp variants up to 190bhp, so a properly mapped defender to say 150 which is around what they class as 1st stage mapping should be well within the engines capabilities..
Not sure what the 2.4 hp range was..
