Thread sealing products - Loctite, Hylomar, Permatex etc.
For those that use one of these sort of products for axle and gearbox plugs, do both sets of threads need to free of oil for them to work? I can't see how the female threads can be kept dry as oil is seeping hours after draining. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I use Loctite 248 (stick) and Hylomar blue on diff, transfer and gearbox plugs. I use on just the cleaned plug threads, and yes you can never stop the drips on the casing threads but they seal fine with the tread locker or sealant on just the cleaned male plug threads. Just adhear to the correct torque when nipping up.

You may use Loctite 55 or just a normal ptfe tape.

I use the latter but apparently the Loctite 55 is much easier to clean off the threads next time you need re fit. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
