LT230 Backlash Issue/Problem?
I did the usual test to check the diff lock was engaging correctly I.e. jack up one front wheel gearbox in neutral and transfer box in high. The jacked up wheel spun freely and when the diff lock was engaged the wheel locked but I could still rotate it by 40 degrees with all the movement being in the LT230 not the front diff.
Is this normal? Would anyone like to try the same check and report back their findings?
TIA

Totally normal and due to the design of the CDL dog clutch. Not anything to worry about.

Thanks for the reply.
Anyone know why my LT230 on my new to me MY13 @ 54k miles has no serial numbers. It also has black RTV instead of gaskets. When replacing the mt82 output shaft with a LOF I got the impression someone had been there before me even at such low mileage.

Gaskets haven't been used in LT230s for years, the factory spec is Hylosil RTV.

A low mileage doesn't mean that the transfer box hasn't needed attention (it is a Defender)! Lack of a serial number is a little odd but as I recall it would have been an applique label rather than a stamped number and could have simply fallen off.
