Land Cruiser 100 4.2TD
Hi everyone,
I’ve just got back from the south of Spain with my Defender (the new Defender). While I was there, I noticed quite a few Land Cruiser 100s with the 4.2 diesel engine — and I’ve always admired them.
In Europe, I think Land Rover really nailed the Defender’s on-road performance — it’s an unbeatable package for when about 80% of your travel is on-road and only 20% is off-road, which suits me perfectly. It’s great on sand trails, wet sand, rocky tracks, and it climbs really well.
However, I have to admit that the Land Cruiser I was following looked noticeably more comfortable off-road. It never lifted a wheel off the ground, whereas with the Defender — even with the independent suspension and the ride height maxed out — you get all the off-road capability, but it feels a bit harsh and bouncy. Sometimes you’re almost jumping out of your seat. Has anyone else experienced this?
Also, does anyone here have experience with the 100 series? How crazy would it be to swap the Defender (which only has 17k miles on it) for a 100 series? How do they compare in terms of road comfort and handling? I’m not fussed about high speeds with all the kit I carry — I’m happy cruising around Europe at 70–80 mph. Manual box or auto?
And what about fuel consumption? I can’t imagine it would be much worse than the 23–25 mpg I get with the Defender.

Brilliant! Nice toys in the stable!
Looking at 100 and 200 at the moment… 100 in uk are mostly affected by rust? 200 not much offer on the market… might be a good idea importing from Japan… how did you import yours? Did you use a broker?

A 100, 200, or a 150 are fairly different cars. 100 & 200 are massive, especially the second, a 150 is built on a "Prado" chassis so less bulky and heavy.
The 100 is, technology-wise, comparable with a (reliable) D2 or P38RR. The 200 is very, very electronically loaded, not easy or cheap to resolve.
150 depends on the trim.

The biggest problem is to find a well-maintained 100, without too many kms, or rust.
