Power steering pump and water pump remove and replace
1999 Defender Td5 LHD
Going to replace the power steering pump and water pump. First time doing this. I’ve seen videos on how to remove one or the other, but can they be removed at the same time by undoing the hoses and unbolting the bracket for the aircon which I don’t have? I’m also replacing the radiator, so I’ll have a little extra room to access the power steering pump. I’m looking for the easiest way to do this for the first and hopefully last time. Thanks!

Hi, this is easier on a Defender than a Discovery. Seeing as you have to remove the radiator you should have a decent amount of room. Remove the air pipes from the intercooler, the hydraulic pipes from the PAS pump and the water pipes from the water pump, there are 4 bolts holding the assembly to the block. The PAS and water pump assembly will come out of the vehicle as one unit, make sure you have the replacement O ring (ERR6711 ) for refitting because the assembly will need to fit perfectly against the engine block when it goes back together to stop water leaks. I expect the PAS pipe will also need a new O ring too.

Thanks Penfold_6290 for the reply. I appreciate your insight. I’m looking forward to having the Defender back on the road.

Good luck, one or two of the bolts are very difficult to get to, but with persistence you can get a socket or ratchet spanner on them.
