I've borrowed a Grenadier
Having owned a Defender Td5, Disco 3, 4, 5 then back to a 4, I thought I'd try a Grenadier and a mate has lent me his for ten days. My initial impression is that it feels like driving my Td5 with the Disco3 comfort. Adjusting to the steering and offset pedals but my initial impression is positive with loads of character. This is the petrol version with 20k miles and aside from software updates and sticking door buttons, it has been reliable. On a 90mile run mainly M4, M25 then A roads it's averaged 22mpg. I have a 250mile run back to Devon tomorrow and then I'll see how it copes with daily life. Clearly a rare vehicle given how many people have commented on it while fuelling up. And it looks epic in green.

lt looks fantastic apart from the hideous front bumper. Hopefully it's possible to fit a smaller one like you can on the Wrangler.

I had a one hour test drive in the diesel version across a variety of town, country lane and motorway and averaged over 26mpg. The torque is noticeably more than the petrol and the diesel felt better suited to the character of the car. After a week, I'm mighty impressed.

On insurance, fully comp was £300 for a Devon postcode which is almost identical to my Subaru ForesterXT. I was quoted c £450 for a service.

The insurance on mine is less than my 2007 Puma.

Love the colour of that Grenadier. They look even better in the flesh than in photos. Well, apart from that front bumper.

But there's aftermarket alternatives available.

Procta here makes some of the bits for that Thumbs Up that spare wheel cover, the cowl cover where the wipers are, the interior water barrier and the rear seat box covers ( rubbers are a Bastid to get on those on the edges) and there is talk that we maybe getting more for it Thumbs Up

Might just be me but I just can’t get past the knock-off design of these.

I do get the appeal but personally I’d feel like wearing a fake watch or going to see an AC/DC cover band and conning myself into believing they sound like the real thing.

Land Rover clearly did their research and worked out the market for a more rugged looking Disco was a lot bigger than a genuine new Defender and went in that direction. They’ve sold a bazillion of them so fair play.

So I get the market for the Ineos but it still leaves me totally cold, personally.

The knock of design is only an issue if you see it as an (original) Defender or a competitor to the new Defender (which I can't see it is). If you think of it as a bit more rugged and a little less fashion statement I think it fits the segment quite nicely.

You need to be a bit more committed to own one and for that reason I like it. When they get accessible to me (used and in France) I might not have a justification to own one unfortunately.

Grenadier vs Puma
I have had Land Rovers of all generations from Series 2 to Disco 4. Finally, several Pumas. I have done a good million km with all of them. I replaced the last Puma with a Grenadier. I am very happy with the Grenadier and it completely replaces the Puma. With better comfort, more durable design. I expect 20 and more years of use. However, it is definitely not comparable to the comfort of the Discovery 4.

On the MPG front...

Petrol one you have suggests 22mpg and the Diesal is 26mpg?

My old L405 full fat range rover would do almost 40mpg on any run over 10 miles? the car I replaced that with is another big SUV, 4.0d and I've just driven across europe with a roof box, family and dogs and have got 38mpg (including some questionable figues in Germany..) I filled it up at one point it says 750 mile range Smile

Why are they so poor? its a fairly new BMW engine?

They have grown on me a little, as has the new Defender. I think one of the issues is the price, when they came out they were going to be 'more afordable' than the Defender however they are still (new) with a family freindly spec getting on for £80K...

You don't see many and like you I'm sure some modification to the grille it would look less dumpy / Santana like...

Unsure how well the 'brand' is doing, I've not looked at resale figures I do know that as I subscibed to them when they launched I still get a LOT of e-mails wanting me to test drive one Smile

enjoy it though, nice to try something different. Thumbs Up
