Pyrenees
Spent 3 weeks driving through the Pyrenees and up the west coast of France. A great trip on deserted roads and tracks with stunning scenery. We did not go with an organised tour as we wanted the freedom to stay or move on as we pleased and to mix up camping with hotels. If you're considering doing it, just go you will not regret it.

We were there in July, lovely part of the world. Shame Pic Negre is closed at the moment, victim of its own popularity.

Me and my son spent 3 weeks last year in Barcelona and the Pyrenees, had a great time and found the Vibraction books perfect….apart from the road closures lol.

Our first overlanding trip this year we are going to the Pyrenees, can't wait to be fair. We have done a few bit around the UK but the pics I see on here, and other places it looks amazing. How do you find out about closures, is the old fashioned way, by turning up and finding them or is there an online source?

Have a look at WikiLoc https://www.wikiloc.com look for reports on there for the routes you're interested in. However, the best way to find out is turn up. If it's closed it's all part of the adventure and you may do another fantastic route as an alternative.

Neil, If it is your first trip then buying a vibraction guide and route is a really good idea.

Laughing

We were there a couple of years ago now, using the vibration books. One of the advantages to that is that they provide updates on any closures etc.

But, on what was to be our last day, on the eastern side, we went miles down a narrow, cobbled track, turned a corner and found a ‘boulder’ blocking any progress. I say boulder, but it was genuinely massive - imagine about 4 shipping containers welded together. There had been a huge thunderstorm in the hills the night before, and even more worrying was the thought of what else might be up there waiting to come down. That was a long and tricky reverse uphill in low box to find a space large enough to turn around.

As you say, all part of the adventure!! Donald

We have just prepped our 1993 110 200 Tdi for Pyranees, accessing from Calais to Biaritz, plan to drive through Andorra, Ordesa National Park and hopefully make it to North coast of Portugal. But what about Crita'Air - no chance of any sticker. Had hoped to potter down Route Nationales, but looks like we are not welcome with our diesel. Any guidance?

Only certain cities are stickered

As of December 2024, ZCRs that might affect drivers arriving from the UK are currently implemented in the following locations in France:

Aix-Marseille-Provence region
Bordeaux
Clermont-Ferrand
Grenoble
Lille
Lyon
Nice
Marseille
Montpellier
Paris
Reims
Rouen
Strasbourg
Saint-Etienne
Toulouse

Its the French way though (at least in Paris):

- No signs marking where it starts or ends, you have to consult a on-line map, most French don't know and don't care
- Certainly no cameras enforcing anything
- A lot of cars don't bother with the sticker or it's faded beyond recognition
- You can park a non-compliant car, because you are allowed to enter before 8, and after 8, so its hard to enforce anything other than getting caught red-handed - driving etc
- The dates for various strictness level enforcement came and went resulting in total confusion
- Now in Paris they are considering abandoning the whole scheme, because it's not fair on the poor (and frankly it isn't fair that money buys you access)

Maybe enforcement is stricter in other cities, but when I passed Toulouse a few weeks ago I cannot recall ever seeing a signpost saying I was entering.

@Revd - yes this is the list of doom for drivers of older vehicles as posted by RAC etc
@TexasRover, I like "The French way" - much more my style

anyone else heard of fines in Spain for driving on The Smugglers trail from Andorra, or is that another hyped "lore"?

Use the Green Zones app, it will show you the boundaries of the zones. Some navigation apps like Waze can also be configured to avoid zones of varying levels depending on crit-air sticker level.

Rouen zone shown by way of example:

And I’ve been stopped by the Guarda Civil coming down the smugglers trail into Spain from Andorra, they were only interested in checking I wasn’t smuggling anything.

Never heard of anyone having any issues driving the route. There’s a toll for driving up Pic Negre on the other side of Andorra but you can still drive the track over into Spain on that side for free too.
