It does not really tackle the root cause of the problem; the O-ring works its way into the aluminium housing over time. This is why this bore is lined with steel.

It's not the o-ring. It's that end of the intermediate shaft is not positively supported. It just rests in a soft, aluminium bore. The steel shaft slowly frets away and hollows out the case. The steel repair sleeve is an interference fit so it doesn't fret away at the aluminium case.
