Just got a 90 02 with 155k. All is good however have noticed a whining noise that increases in volume when increasing rpms. I’m unsure if it’s standard noise for the td5, but would like to check just incase.
The noise is not related to the transfer case. I’m assuming the only possibilities are belt based. Included a link to a YouTube video of the noise. Any help would be much appreciated. https://youtube.com/shorts/GYuYvRChLCQ?si=ilCKeZPwGAMif4y2 |

Definitely sounds like a power steering whine to me also. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Power steering fluid was good.
I don’t notice any change from the noise when steering. I took the belt off and I believe at least one of the pulleys is bad. Video attached. Thank you for your help. https://youtube.com/shorts/fsoNZyRnYu0?si=03U4oJUjzPqkZ3_U |

The bearings on the idler pulley don’t sound great. That could explain the noise as that is what I experienced.
If it is that, don’t buy a ‘cheap’ replacement as I did that and the bearings sounded as bad as the old one. Bought an OEM and it was sorted. |

Cheers for the advice.
I agree I’ll also do both those idlers as the other one doesn’t sound far off |

Yes they’re inexpensive enough even for OEM. Worth doing.

Hate to ask but being so new to the scene, you don’t know of a good website I could source them from.
TIA. |

You’ll find many recommended sellers championed on here.
JGS 4x4 was where I bought mine quite a few years ago, but you can find them on eBay being sold from reputable sellers but do beware of cheap products. |
