Handbrake cable question
Hello all, I've spent the day trying to replace my handbrake cable after it snapped at the lever/cab end - as it turns out I have the wrong cable but I've ordered the correct one which should be here soon.
My question relates to removing the old cable/sheath - I've removed the prop shaft at the drum, removed the drum and both shoes with springs etc and now I'm left with the cable (with the spring on the end) and outer sheath - but I can't work out if I just need to pull the sheath out, or if it's retained in some way mechanically? Similarly, the sheath at the cab end looks like it might be 13mm nut - please set me straight if not.
Any help gratefully received - as usual the Haynes manual is rubbish!

You've probably long since sorted this, but at the cab end the cable can be removed by removing the retaining split pin from the lever & unhooking the cable end. Then the cable assembly can be easily pulled out from underneath the car. You need to reach up behind the transfer box, get a good grip on the cable sheath & pull it out. Sometimes a squirt of WD40 on the cable inside the car helps to make cable assembly removal easier.

The nut you can see is an adjuster (there are 2 of them next to each other) at the cab end of the cable. This allows adjustment of the inner cable relative to the sheath, if necessary, on installation. Routine handbrake adjustment is done by the 17mm adjuster nut on the front of the brake back-plate.

The new cable can then be attached at the brake end, & then the cab end - essentially a reversal of the above.

I wrote a HOWTO on this after I did my own cable replacement, which I can post if you still need it. This goes into a bit more detail.

Cheers,

Lionel
