Wingtop chequer plate - best practice?
My 2016 110 is nearly immaculate except for some scuffed wing tops where the previous users (the MOD) have clearly used it as a table for the gear and making cups of tea etc. Also now with the Alu-Cab fitted I've needed to stand on the wing tops a few times for access.

So, I am going to fit chequer plate wing top covers. I've gone for the silver Nakatanenga ones which seem really good quality but just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to get a good end result

The kit just came with pop rivets but I have seen others use countersunk bolts; any reason for one over the other? Also am I right in thinking some kits have a foam/felt underneath?

I don't really want to trap loads of water/sand/dust underneath forever. Should I be getting extra wax or something underneath before fitting?

Any tips from perfectionists welcomed! Cheers, David

Normally you will have a closed cell foam gasket that adheres to the underside of the chequer plate before fitting.

That’s what mammoth use for their solution. They also use bolts and nuts to fit the chequer plate for ease of removal for repainting etc.

Before fitting a good polish then a good wax with bilt hamber double speed wax will help.

For ultimate protection I suppose you could mask off the area on the wing top that won’t be covered by the chequer plate and then spray bilt hamber dynax UC as that’s a clear underbody wax. You need to double check with bilt hamber before doing so but I’m pretty sure it would be ok.

Sorry Ian, didn't see this reply...

Many thanks for the advice, that's exactly what I was looking for! Will do some good preparation and then hopefully only ever have to do the job once! Cheers, David

Even Nakatanenga powder coating will eventually chip, so at some point it will need removing to blast clean and re powder coat, or better still paint.

I went for plain stainless finish so fingers crossed it should hold up pretty well if I get it right Cheers, David
