2013 PUMA DASH EXTREMELY HOT
As I begin to attempt to solve a variety of heating and AC issues, I thought I'd start by asking if my dash console should be extrememly hot to the touch with the heater on, even low?

Recently we have found that with the heater on, the cente console and most of the dash is excessively hot? Is this another premium design feature or could there be an issue? I'll be checking cable linkage and control valves anyway but this seemed like a separate issue. Dorothy - 2001 Defender Special Vehicles TD5 Hardtop (Ex Scottish & Southern) Side Lockers, Side Hatches - Poorly chassis and bulkhead. I think the air ducting is leaking a lot so basically hot air is pumped out into the space between the dash and the bulkhead. Eventually the dash will be very hot. This is to some extent a feature, we want it to leak a bit to keep things dry, but maybe we have more leakage than needed.
Also the heater control as you might be aware already, is basically on/off, and On means a lot of heat. Or rather very high temperature on the air it pumps out.

The control cable on mine is currently not adjusted so that it actually closes the valve fully when knob is turned fully to cold. This leads to some amount of heating and the impression that the AC is not working properly. If we want proper cold we need to open the bonnet and push the valve close. At first we thought that the AC didn't work, but it turns out it was only the valve.

Mine gets very hot and I know the ducting doesn't fit together very well. In particular, the ducts that supply the 2 fixed vents on the top middle dash don't seat properly because a previous owner damaged them when doing other work. I am going to try applying duct tape to the joints and reshaping the deformed ducts using heat to see if I can get them to seal better. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Thanks. So perhaps wrapping the ducting with some insulation as well as tape may help. Surprised to hear your Landy leaks?? Very Happy This flap certainly sounds like a problem as well as the connections within the engine bay. Couldn't replicate the issue but it felt as if hot air was blowing in the through the footwell vents either side of the trans tunnel, which coupled with the gearbox heat was quite unpleasant.

I'd better get a 'BFR' of heat reflective tape too...

I wonder what the high-end Defender builders do about the appalling heating snd cooling issues. If you spend £250k on a Defender decked out with Tweed, walnut and £20k of ice do you still get the SH1 heating, ducting and aircon?? Dorothy - 2001 Defender Special Vehicles TD5 Hardtop (Ex Scottish & Southern) Side Lockers, Side Hatches - Poorly chassis and bulkhead. Forgot to mention another problem we had that prevented cool air or even ambient temperature air to come in to the coupe. One of the water drain plugs in the inlet air duct was missing so the fan sucked air from the engine compartment, basically 70 degrees warm. The duct is also very poorly sealed to the blower housing. I wrapped some duct tape around that joint.

Re poor fitting heater ducting allowing air from engine bay into vehicle.

This topic covers the subject well https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic75787.html?highlight=duct
