Well, since the last post, we have finally moved back to the Lake District. The Defender works very well in the dry stone walled lanes being slightly narrower than the D3 and L322. This week it became acquainted with the local MOT tester who gave it a clean pass! Hopefully a Clarke temporary garage will be arriving to enable a Campervan project to be finished off but also to all a dry space to tackle outstanding jobs on the Defender too.

This weekend, we had the first taste of spring here in the lakes. Warm sunshine prompted me to think about camping which meant the new to me roof tent had to go on. The ox overland that I did have fitted , a tent that we took all the way down to Morocco over the Atlas Mountains and through the Sahara, is a superb bit of kit. It’s just when your travel involves packing away each day and you’re getting on a bit, climbing all over the Defender takes time out of travelling. So, it will hopefully be finding a new home of the roof of 2006 G4 Challenge UK competitor Brians Freelander 1, which is Tangiers Orange of course!
The replacement tent is an iKamper Skycamp 2.0 mini which has very similar dimensions to the Ox but weights about 10kg less and takes sub 5mins to pack away. It’s got a few nice features and a plush quilted roof liner complete with a map of the world on it. So, roll on the lighter evenings and warmer weather to enable me to do some work on the oily bits. ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge 2009 90 commercial. 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled. 2002 Range Rover G4 Event car (Australian leg) 2008 Discovery 3 G4 UK Selections car 1968 Series 2a |

What a great thread, catching up on 11 pages of posts has been like reading a (short!) book!
Love the G4, it's such an iconic Defender look (clearly along with the Camel) and your work to get it useable, reliable and back close to the original spec is fascinating. Keep up the good work ![]() Paul |

Many thanks for the kind words. It’s a kind of therapy to document the journey, may also help the next owner should it need to find a new home.
This weekend was the Castlewood 4x4 show which the G4 owners club attended, allowed my to put it on show and test the new (to me) roof tent. ![]() Click image to enlarge 2009 90 commercial. 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled. 2002 Range Rover G4 Event car (Australian leg) 2008 Discovery 3 G4 UK Selections car 1968 Series 2a |

This weekend I drove the G4 from the Lakes to Snowdonia. On the way home it celebrated 130K miles and promptly stopped me selecting 5th or reverse. It got me home but a problem for another day!

I had a little look into the 5th/reverse issue and the selector pins are catching on the worn turret.
![]() Click image to enlarge Having the syncro slickshift in the 90 makes a world of difference to the driving experience so I ordered a kit for the 110 as it comes with a new turret. Got the chance to try out the slick shift today with a tip out to Ennerdale Water. Whilst not at tight as the puma’s gear change, it is bloody good and have massively improved the driving experience.
Also reminded me how much of a nicer ride the 110 has over the 90. I think the big wheels and the aftermarket shocks need to be removed. ![]() Click image to enlarge 2009 90 commercial. 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled. 2002 Range Rover G4 Event car (Australian leg) 2008 Discovery 3 G4 UK Selections car 1968 Series 2a |
