D250 Engine Oil Volume / DPF Burn

I recently drained the oil and refilled 8.8L and when I checked the level on the dipstick it looked like it was over the mark. The manual actually states 9.8L for the D250 so I was a bit surprised. It was soon afterwards that I saw smoke in the engine bay during a DPF regen while my car was stationary. Reaching for the extinguisher I switched off the engine and popped up the engine hood, and luckily there was no fire, but the heat from the DPF burn was creating a lot of smoke. Having also fitted a Fumoto valve with the oil change, I removed 200 ml and rechecked the dipstick. I haven't seen smoke since, but I can detect a distinct burning smell in the cabin on each DPF regen.
My DPF cycles through a regen every few hundred kilometres. I think this is normal. Seems to always kick off just when I leave the freeway. Lately I can smell it more in the cabin, (not sure if the oil change info is relevant) so I switch on the recirc air when I know it's in regen. The particulate filter in the glovebox seems to do little to remove olfactory smoke. I will check/replace the filter later today, see if that helps. Maybe I have an exhaust leak in the engine bay? I only used to notice the smell of the regen when I was standing near the tailpipe. I have two questions:
Does anyone smell the regen inside the cabin when the car is stationary?
What is the correct engine oil volume for the D250, given the manual states 9.8L for the diesel?

No smell in the Cabin during regen.
And my last oil change was 8L with new oil filter.

Mine takes 8.5 litres when drained using the sump plug and also replaced the oil filter.

l don't really smell anything during a regeneration, maybe a little outside the vehicle. Regeneration generally occurs between 200-300km depending on how it's been driven.
