Manual gearbox (R380) oil…
I use Land Rover branded MTF94 oil in my gearbox.

I have sufficient of the above to hand for when I routinely change the oil in summer, but I am interested to hear/read what others recommend for their R380?

I have read that the LR MTF94 was ‘good’ at the time but more modern alternatives may be superior and may improve gear changes? I am aware that the recognised experts such as Ashcroft and Winchester propose alternatives. I currently am not experiencing any issues so I may just stick wit the LR MTF94.

I do acknowledge the ‘agricultural’ nature of the R380 so I am not expecting that any alternatives will be transformational - I am just interested in what others have been using.

Just to add my bit.

I always insisted on genuine LR MTF94 in my previous Discovery and then in my current Defender and did for a number of years.

The last time I thought I would save some money and use another cheaper MTF94 and I am convinced gear change quality has deteriorated since so I am considering going back to genuine stuff but it's getting hard to find a very pricey.
Thing is I am sure it was better than what I have now... 2004 Defender 90 Td5 CSW

Thanks all. Very interesting. I appreciate your feedback 👍

I’ve never had any problems with the LR MTF94, nor the gearbox itself.

There is an argument for ‘if it ain’t broke…’ but I’d hate to be blindly carrying on if there are better* alternatives out there.

I do acknowledge that my favoured product is increasing in cost, and reducing in availability, but that isn’t the primary driver, if you pardon the pun…

*I don’t want to clearly define ‘better’ at this stage as I will cause an argument!

Some weeks ago was checking the engine oil spec I use on my cheap daily…as was thinking if I could use same in my motorcycle…. albeit all info online says no due to the wet clutch.
https://www.millersoils-shop.co.uk/trident...engine-oil

If you read the spec, it says Land Rover MTF-94 Gear Oil Specification

I first tried it out on a cheaper 125cc motorcycle with a horrible gear change, and what a difference it made. As a side note, NO issues with slipping clutch. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

ATF (Dextron) is old specification for R380, it was replaced byt MTF94, and this old informarion should be discarted from manuals.
According to my experience, there are differences between Texaco MTF94 and other MTF94 compatible oils. And I have also experienced faked MTF94 oils, so for me only original small packages of MTF94. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

But transmission oils aren't just about ease of shifting, are they?

Gear shifting relies on synchronization, which brings shafts rotating at different speeds to the same rotational speed. A good gearbox lubricant protects the bearings and internal gears from wear (which requires a viscosity suitable for all temperatures and suitable additives for the gear coating).

My point is, for example, a thicker lubricant may make shifting easier, but not necessarily ensure the long-term lubrication of the gearbox. Therefore, the quality of an oil shouldn't be judged solely on how easy it makes gear shifting. “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique.
