Just caught a National Geographic show called "Perilous Journeys - The Roof of Africa", which features a chap taking a Defender over the Sani Pass in Lesotho. He has a fun time
 - a broken rear half shaft leaves him with only Front Wheel Drive, then a snapped drive shaft leaves him with No Wheel Drive! He ends up with the half shaft replaced, so finishes with just Rear Wheel Drive, so tries every combination possible  ...and it still got him there (eventually).
Slightly disappointing to see the rescue/repair personnel arriving in Japanese 4WD's without issue, and weirdly the make of his own vehicle is never mentioned throughout, but its a good watch anyway. I recommend looking out for it or downloading it (legally, of course  )... |

What I can't work out is:
Was the vehicle a wreck in the first place or Did he know how to drive a 4x4 in that terrain or was he very very unlucky or in his haste did he just cause too much strain on the vehicle? He's lucky that he didn't break his thumbs too! The tracks in Wales looked more treacherous to me - perhaps they did not show the really difficult parts? Mind you it sort of reminds me why I have uprated half shafts and locking diffs |

Sorry guys but it's all show and a bad one at that.
Manifestly that person could not drive or for the purpose of the show they added a lot of a non-sense situation. I am doing the Sani Pass at least once a month driving tourists and taking people in self-drive Landies : this is an EASY road! Just a gravel road with a lot of gradient and a superb view. From Sani-top, crossing Lesotho both on the eastern and central roads is pretty easy too and the descent towards Ficksburg in South Africa is as good as an highway (it was built to supply materials for the Katze dam while they were building it) If you really want to test your skills at driving an interesting trail do rather the van Zyl Pass in Namibia : it's a lot more fun! On the other hand that guy appearing in that Sani Pass documentary would have never survived that one! |
