Afternoon all.
I've had my 90 Hard Top for about 4months now. I was trying to find the right colour/spec., brand new on a JLR forecourt - because I didn't want to wait for a new build; as it replaced a lease pickup that went back in November. I managed to find the spec I wanted, the only problems I foresaw were it having Wrangler AT's and the dealer being in Scotland - but needs must. The 350mile drive home on the A1 in the rain, was the perfect opportunity for me to get to know it. I was surprised that the AT tyres were perfectly well behaved and not at all noisy, like I thought they might be. It was another 2months before I got back on a dual carriage way at any real speed, this time on a hot sunny day. I was surprised to find the steering very twitchy whenever it caught the while lines during lane changing, and horribly twitchy when taking exiting on a slip-road; where the marking road paint is much wider. Has anyone else experienced this? I automatically assumed it is the tyres behaving differently in the dry at first (not that it makes sense), but I googled "L663 steering rack problems" and seems I can't rule that out as the problem. I spend 99% of the time on B roads, so it's scared the sheeaat out of me on a couple of occasions now, it really does pull the motor to one side when doing 70mph+ and changing lane. |

I hadn't considered that... I can give it a try - as I may of turned it off on the drive back from Scotland.
But does it actually stay off? I'm not too happy with the stop/start "feature"... that feckin thing doesn't stay off and has nearly cost me the back end on a couple of occasions - was planning to have it deactivated. |

You probably have the latest version of driver assistance. There are three levels, operated by a button, top right, of the left hand steering wheel switch panel. The default is ‘high’ meaning all the nanny driver interference modes are on. Low means they are pretty much off. Once the ignition is on its three presses of that button to select the low level, so not too much of a fiddle each time you start up.
Mine is an earlier version where most of it is set through the car’s settings on screen and they stay off with the exception of auto stop start which I have to switch off on each start up. 23.5MY 90 V8 Carpathian grey |

Thanks for the info.
Although I really hope it's the tyres... as I really don't understand how all this interference helps - if it hinders whilst interfering in with me driving like a normal human. ![]() |

I've got Wrangler ATs and they are perfectly stable at speed. When you say "twitchy" can you feel the steering pulling against the direction you're trying to steer? That sounds like either Lane Keep Assist or the Collision Avoidance. These, along with the Emergency Braking (which is downright dangerous IMHO) can be turned off via vehicle settings on pre-24 cars and turned down on later models. The LR iGuide will give you the details.

I spend very little time on dual carriageways so I can't remember exactly what it "seems" to be trying to do, as it just scared the crap out of me - it certainly wasn't helping one bit... hence I had no thought it was anything other than tyres or the steering itself (something being wrong, not something trying to assist).
I haven't had the misfortune to encounter emergency braking yet - but I'm not in favour of that either. I don't understand why all this crap has to be re-activated every journey if you turned it off on your last. ![]() |

You have the nanny state Brussels Eurocrats to thank for that. 23.5MY 90 V8 Carpathian grey

I have the wranglers on this and on the last one.
Its not the tyres. I think your describing the lane assist - which has been around for a long time...its the new driver assist thats a pain. Mike |

It was indeed the lane assist.
I had an appointment this morning and thus ventured outside of my usual commute... on an A road with proper white lining. It was that interfering with the steering when I changed lane on the dual carriageway. Thanks Nick for advising on how to de-acivate this dangerous dross... I must have done it unintentionally when testing buttons when I left the stealers in Edinburgh. |

My 2022 D250 has a lane assist button on the steering wheel. A couple of times l've pressed it accidentally and then wondered why the steering is being pulled around all the time. Fortunately on the 2022 it stays in "low" assist mode and it rarely interferes.

And even if we agree that the lane assist control is a disaster, it is worth remembering that even if it is active, if you indicate your maneuvers with the turn signal it works much better. In short, BMW drivers would probably have a bad time.🫢 Defender 110 SE I6 D250 23MY

the level of interference has been the same since the 1st l663 the difference is the wider system of bongs and stuff like that change (and is annoying but you can with the right kit turn it off from high and customise bits) Mike

I intend to have start/stop disabled as it interferes with my drive to work in a way that could/will cause an accident.
The lane assist is just a minor annoyance... now I understand why it occurs. I fear as it's a purchase from new, that if I interfere with all the "interferences" that just straight up annoy me, the manufacturer might void my warranty for any reason they may seem fit. |

I could be wrong, but from driving a loaner Evoque recently I think the stop/start is also disabled when you select the Low setting for driver assistance. So, as I said before, three presses of the button should have it all set to off. Hitting the button will become habit after a while so be grateful it's much easier and quicker in the LR setup than in other brands where you have to press a combination of buttons and touchscreen options each time you start up. Infuriating! 23.5MY 90 V8 Carpathian grey
